Steve Garvey was actually a vastly overrated player during his playing career whose career had became more appropriately rated as we have grown to know more about how to properly evaluate players over the years. Garvey was a great hitter for average but didn’t walk at all or hit for much power. Cecil Cooper was just as good as Garvey if not better than him yet received a fraction of the attention and acclaim that Garvey got because he played for the small market Milwaukee Brewers instead of a team like the LA Dodgers.

Andrés Galarraga always comes to mind. A few rough years but consistently hitting. 399 HR's in career. Hit .370 in 120 games in 1993 among other great seasons. Long 19 year career playing at a high level.

Isn’t Molitor in the HoF? Don’t know if I’d consider that underrated.

Also, Dale Murphy > Steve Garvey

He also hit the longest home run I have ever seen.

Galarraga vs Kevin Brown at sea level

Could be a good one

Never seemed underrated to me but that's based merely on his baseball card always being a pretty big deal when I was a kid.

I don't think of Helton or Galarraga as underrated by baseball fans, but I do think the Rockies are kind of an island when it comes to getting attention for their stars

Position players for the Rockies def get underrated I think. I think people assume any major leaguer can roll out of bed and put up huge numbers at Coors. Combine that with the franchise’s consistent irrelevance and they’ve had a lot of good position players who haven’t necessarily gotten their due over the years

That's a long list of "fan favorite" type guys that aren't all time greats. David Justice being the possible exception.

Ray Lankford was a favorite of mine as a kid. Most HRs in Busch Stadium II.

Brian Giles was really fricking good on some really terrible Pirates teams

That’s a great name for this thread
