Neuse got moved to 3rd and was not going to be moving up in the org with Rendon there for the foreseeable future. Not sad about losing him.

Luzardo is a different story. I liked the way the LHP was progressing.

As for Blake...good riddance

With Doolittle off board, trade activity will increase around #Reds LHP Tony Cingrani, who is quietly having good season (0.962 WHIP). @MLB

One year ago, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman began laying the groundwork for a modified sell-off, making sure he was prepared if ownership gave him the go-ahead to trade relievers Andrew Miller and Aroldis Chapman.

Orioles GM Dan Duquette currently is in a similar position, informing teams that he is willing to deal his top relievers and potential free-agent outfielder Seth Smith as long as he receives ownership approval, major-league sources say.

The Orioles entered Sunday at 42-48, 8½ games back in the AL East and five back in the race for the second wild card. Many of their baseball people want to position the team for a better future, but owner Peter Angelos has permitted trades of veterans at the non-waiver deadline only once since purchasing the club in 1993.

That one selloff occurred in 2000, when the Orioles parted with Will Clark, B.J. Surhoff, Mike Bordick, Harold Baines, Charles Johnson and Mike Timlin. The team’s primary chips now are three relievers – lefty Zach Britton and righties Brad Brach and Darren O’Day, all of whom are under club control beyond this season. Catcher Welington Castillo, who holds a $7 million player option for next season, also could draw interest.

The Orioles, according to sources, are not willing to listen on center fielder Adam Jones and third baseman Manny Machado, sources say – Machado, a potential free agent after next season, is batting only .234, perhaps diminishing his value. They also do not intend to trade reliever Mychal Givens, who is drawing interest but is under club control through 2021.

Britton, earning $11.4 million, has one year of arbitration remaining before becoming a free agent. Brach, earning $3.05 million, also is under control for one more season. O’Day is in the second year of a four-year, $31 million deal under which he will earn $9 million in both 2018 and ’19.

The Dodgers and Astros are among the contenders intrigued by Britton, who has pitched four times after missing much of the first half with a strained left forearm. Brach, too, likely would be a hot commodity – he was an All-Star in 2016 and is enjoying a third straight excellent season.

The Nationals were among the other clubs that had interest in Britton, but they addressed their bullpen needs Sunday by acquiring right-hander Ryan Madson and left-hander Sean Doolittle from the Athletics for righty Blake Treinen and two prospects, left-hander Jesus Lazardo and third baseman Sheldon Neuse.

Yet the Rockies would obviously like to put more distance between themselves and the pack. One way they might go about accomplishing that goal? Trading for Detroit Tigers outfielder J.D. Martinez. The Rockies have interest in the impending free agent, per MLB Network's Jon Morosi:

quote:

The Giants and Cardinals have now expressed their interest in possibly acquiring Marlins star slugger Giancarlo Stanton, according to Craig Mish of SiriusXM.

The Giants are showing the "most interest" because Mish says there is a belief that Stanton "may be willing to waive" his no-trade clause. The Cardinals also "checked in," according to Mish, because Stanton does not want to be part of a rebuilding franchise and only "prefers to stay if team stays together."

quote:

A-Rod credulously floated an idea that seems fairly far-fetched: The Tigers should send Miguel Cabrera to the Boston Red Sox in a "blockbuster" deal that would reunite him with old general manager Dave Dombrowski.

As long as Orioles ownership approves, executive VP of baseball operations Dan Duquette has told other teams that he is open to trading three of his top relievers (Zach Britton, Brad Brach and Darren O’Day) as well as outfielder Seth Smith, Ken Rosenthal reports via his Facebook page

Though the Twins have received trade interest in both ace Ervin Santana and closer Brandon Kintzler, it would be “very difficult to justify selling” either hurler with the team still in the pennant race, MLB Network’s Jon Morosi tweets.

“A fair amount of inquiries” have come in on Mets closer Addison Reed, relays the New York Post’s Mike Puma, who adds that the team would like to keep fellow reliever Jerry Blevins (Twitter link).

Speaking of the Mets, they’re “close” to promoting their best prospect, Triple-A infielder Amed Rosario to the majors, a source familiar with management’s thinking told Bob Klapisch of The Record.

The division-rival Marlins and Nationals had “substantive talks” regarding Miami relievers AJ Ramos and David Phelps before Sunday, tweets Joe Frisaro of MLB.com. The Nationals might be out of the running for those two after acquiring Ryan Madson and Sean Doolittle from the A’s, but Eddie Matz of ESPN.com could see the Nats further bolstering their bullpen before the trade deadline.

Veteran first baseman Chris Carter hit the free agent market when the Yankees released him this past Monday, but it won’t be a long stay on the unemployment line. Carter is “likely” to sign with either the Athletics or Rangers, reports Jon Heyman of FanRag. It’s unclear whether Carter would net a major league contract or a minor league accord.

Sonny Gray has a strong link to Brewers pitching coach Derek Johnson, and some close to Gray believe it’s strong enough that the Brewers may be the most likely landing spot for Gray.

Gray, perhaps the best starting pitcher likely to be traded, pitched at Vanderbilt, where Johnson was his pitching coach for three years, as noted in this tweet here.

Gray has said in the past that Johnson is “like a father figure to him,” and folks say those aren’t just words. Gray lost his father in a car accident when he was a high school freshman, and Gray and Johnson have a strong bond.

The Brewers are in the market for starting pitchers, and along with the Yankees and a couple others, were a finalist for the Jose Quintana before he was traded cross-town from the White Sox to the Cubs.

Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports and MLB Network also mentioned J.A. Happ as a pitcher that interests the Brewers.

Would be smart for the brewers. They have the offense to win and the prospects to get it done. They need pitching

Or they could just wait it out

Heyman keeps pushing that line like he's got some kind of big scoop. Does it matter to the A's front office that Gray's former pitching coach is now in Milwaukee? Not in the slightest.

The Red Sox are “moving closer” to a deal with the White Sox that would send third baseman Todd Frazier to Boston, USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reports (Twitter link). Both the Red Sox and archrival Yankees, who are 2.5 games behind AL East-leading Boston, sent scouts to Chicago on Sunday to observe Frazier and teammate David Robertson, according to FanRag’s Jon Heyman
