Certainly still left to be seen, but he bought himself a ridiculously long leash last year. One of the keys will be knowing when to let go with the first decision being Arrieta. It needs to happen IMO.

You still need to develop in your own system, especially pitching, which is probably the only question mark about the Cubs going forward.

you still need to be able to bring about contributors on your own. the value of those type of players are just too great and its usually those kind of players that bring about championships just because they are over playing their contract by so much

I think he's shown over and over again that he understands this. Nomar and Manny (different situation but the point stands) in Boston, and didn't overpay Fowler last year when he thought it didn't make financial sense. He'll do the same with Arrieta.

Especially with Arrieta saying he will not be giving any hometown discount or whatever and go to the highest bidder

Certainly makes it easier on Theo

The Cubs drafted near ML Ready Bryant, and then got Rizzo in a swindle (metaphorically). They they had 2 lesser, but equally important swindles for Russel and Arrieta. That gave them a great base. And their farm wasn't that bad to begin with. Hendry knew talent - he just goofed trying to build a team.
The Whitesox on the other hand, have drafted poorly for years, and don't spend much in international signings (they'll pop for 1 player once in a while, but they don't do the large coverage like the Cubs, Rangers, RedSox and Padres do).
On the other hand, the Whitesox had far more to trade than the Cubs when they were rebuilding...the Sox haven't made any swindles...probably got a little more than warranted for Eaton, but less for Sale. But they have a solid group of top prospects now.
And they've actually had a few guys from AAA pop on the major league team who could end up being average players...something they couldn't find when trying to build around Sale, Q, Eaton and Abreu.

Rays outfielder Colby Rasmus has been placed on the restricted list after deciding to “step away” from baseball, according to a team announcement. Rasmus is unlikely to return this season.

1. I didn't say Theo was perfect.
2. It hasn't worked out with Heyward, but at the time of his signing, he was coming off 4 seasons of 3.5 WAR or more with 3 of those 4 being over 5.0. As crappy as his offensive season was last year, the Cubs had 54 defensive runs saved, and Heyward had 24 of them by himself. Contrary to popular belief, he hasn't been a total bust.

There’s “increasing buzz” that the Rangers will listen to offers on top starters Yu Darvish and Cole Hamels if they don’t open the second half of the season with strong play, tweets ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick. It’s been previously reported that the Rangers will hold onto Darvish even if they fall out of the race, so that’d represent something of a change of mindset for GM Jon Daniels & Co.

quote:

According to Miller, the Marlins have spoken to more than 10 teams about right-hander David Phelps, and there are two or three clubs that are showing “serious” interest in closer AJ Ramos

quote:

Perhaps more interestingly, Morosi adds that the Braves have said right-hander Julio Teheran isn’t available,

quote:

Heyman also notes that Braves left-hander Jaime Garcia is one rental pitcher that interests the Royals.

quote:

Yankees, Nationals, Dodgers, Cubs, Brewers, Royals, Angels and Marinerscould all be in the mix for lefty Brad Hand, Heyman reports. Regarding the Dodgers, Heyman and Robert Murray report that San Diego asked Los Angeles for top prospect Alex Verdugo in return, though there’s “no likelihood” of L.A. meeting that price.

No way anyone sees value in Cole right now.. 28 strikeouts in 58.1 innings. Of course his ERA isn't bad after two strong starts to end the first half.

The name and just the consistency throughout probably props him up though. He's an interesting case

Plus hamels had a no trade clause to 20 teams makes moving him that much more difficult

Teheran's value isn't at an all time low. It's not as it's peak, but his age, contract, and track record makes him a very valuable commodity. Check his home/road splits as well.

He's been one of the worst pitchers in baseball this year. His value is at an all time low for him
