Yeah his velo is up compared to the last several years. It wouldn't surprise me at all to see him get it together down the stretch and be a big contributor

his change up is nowhere near as effective as it has been, hes walking a shite ton more batters than he ever has before, and hes getting hit harder than he ever has before

i personally would stay away even if the tigers were eating salary

The Brewers are the surprise leaders of the National League Central as the All-Star break approaches, and Jon Morosi of MLB.com writes that they’ve begun doing “background work” on White Sox lefty Jose Quintana and Athletics righty Sonny Gray in advance of the non-waiver trade deadline.

Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein warned today that outside additions won’t solve the club’s woes, as Jesse Rogers of ESPN.com was among those to report. Epstein says the defending World Series champs “can’t force anything” at the trade deadline. Whatever changes to the roster are ultimately made, he says, the organization’s “biggest fixes are inside the clubhouse.”

Similarly, rival organizations are surely wonder whether the Pirates have any inclination to take offers on righty Gerrit Cole. There’s nothing definitive in that regard, but Jon Heyman of Fan Rag writes (among many other National League notes) that the Bucs are giving indication that Cole isn’t likely to be traded.

Bucs would be selling low on Cole with how he's performed this year. And they have plenty of young talent that is close to the ML level where they could be improved as a team next year.

hes having one of the lowest swinging strike% of his career and his overall contact% is one of the highest of his career

he could easily turn it around, but his numbers really dont suggest that

Just curious about Marte and Polanco. Polanco looks like he regressed and no clue about Marte coming back from suspension.

9 trades that make sense at the deadline

1. Jose Quintana, SP, and Tommy Kahnle, RP, from the White Sox to the Astros for Francis Martes, RHP prospect, and Kyle Tucker, OF prospect.

2. David Robertson, RP, and Anthony Swarzak, RP, from the White Sox to the Nationals for Drew Ward, 3B prospect, Jesus Luzardo, LHP prospect and Pedro Severino, C prospect.

3. Justin Verlander, SP, and $20 million from the Tigers to the Cubs for Thomas Hatch, RHP prospect, Jose Paulino, LHP prospect, and Jose Rosario, RHP prospect.

4. Todd Frazier and $5 million from the White Sox to the Red Sox for Bryan Mata, RHP prospect.

5. Matt Adams, 1B, from the Braves to the Yankees for Dominguez Acevedo, RHP, and Drew Finley, RHP.

6. Josh Donaldson, 3B, from the Jays to the Cardinals for Alex Reyes, RHP prospect, Delvin Perez, SS prospect, and Magneuris Sierra, OF prospect.

7. Sonny Gray, SP, and Sean Doolittle, RP, from the A’s to the Yankees for Clint Frazier, OF prospect, and Chance Adams, SP prospect.

8. J.D. Martinez, OF, from the Tigers to the Dodgers for Dustin May, RHP prospect, and Josh Sborz, RHP prospect.

9. Brad Hand, RP, from the Padres to the Dodgers for Brock Stewart, RHP prospect and Trevor Oaks, RHP prospect.

dont agree with a number of these but still something to look at

Polanco is just now getting back in the groove after that ankle injury earlier in the year. He's been hot over the past week or so. Marte will come back in about a week or so and THEN I think they will deal Cutch. His value won't get any higher than it is right now with his age and free agency looming within a couple of years. I think they keep Cole to be a leader for their young arms.

No enough

Adams will be in the rotation and I like a rotation of Severino, Montgomery, Adams, Pineda, and then someone from FA

while the cost is fair, i dont think the astros would pull the trigger on quintana in that scenario

I don't see them really needing Quintana if Keuchel, McClullers, Morton, and McHugh get healthy. Seems bullpen would be more of a need and maybe just SP depth, so a smaller trade

If we give up Tucker in a deal for those two I will be pissed. If it were Gray and Doolittle I could deal with it. I like Kahnle but Quintana not so much

Frazier to the Sox makes sense... I bet Boston is wishing they would have kept Shaw at this point.

There's no reason to have any faith in Morton or mchugh. The astros 100% will add a starter.

They are loaded with MLB ready prospects. They will control the deadline if they want to
