As this year’s trade deadline approaches, one of the most high-profile players who could be on the move is Tigers right-hander Justin Verlander. MLB.com’s Jon Paul Morosi reports that the Cubs are interested in Verlander (along with Tigers catcher Alex Avila) but the teams haven’t yet begun formal trade negotiations

I don't see how verlander gets moved if the tigers don't eat some of the salary
Posted on 7/6/17 at 2:18 pm to WestCoastAg
Me either but we've seen crazier things
Posted on 7/6/17 at 2:20 pm to WestCoastAg
He only has two years left on his deal after this one. No way the Tigers are getting close to what they're asking for him though unless they eat some money. He also has a full NTC
Posted on 7/6/17 at 2:33 pm to ShaneTheLegLechler
Yeah I'm sure some teams would trade prospects for Verlander or take his contract but not both. Tigers need to eat about 40% of that contract to get any prospects back.

The interesting fire sale will be in Miami.
Stories are, once All Star game is over, they will go into sell mode.

They can't without MLB approval since Loria is planning on selling the team. That is what I was reading yesterday about their situation

56 million over next two years (assuming he doesn't finish in top 5 of CY Young) I doubt the Tigers would eat 40% of that (22 million) but I could see them eating enough to make him attractive. Say you could get Verlander at 20-22 million a year, you know he has been an ace and at the very worst right now he is a #2 or 3.

Yep until the team sales I doubt they make any big moves. Marlins have one of the best lineups in the NL but don't have a good enough pitching rotation to win right now. They have one of the worst farm systems in baseball which forces them to rebuild right now.

They would be a WC team with Fernandez on the mound
Posted on 7/6/17 at 2:57 pm to tduecen
Yeah with Fernandez it was all about building a rotation around him. They never could put together a solid staff around him. They would be right in the playoff hunt with Colorado with him.
Posted on 7/6/17 at 2:58 pm to rebel of fortune
Fernandez, Volquez, Koehler, Chen would have been good enough
Posted on 7/6/17 at 6:57 pm to tduecen
Tigers will have to eat a good bit as they are desperate for prospects. They have a shite farm and they know they'll have to pay for prospects
Posted on 7/6/17 at 7:07 pm to Lester Earl
Even then idk what I would be comfortable trading for verlander

I know I'm late to the party but I don't believe that the Cards will make a move for a player of much significance
First off for the reasons listed in this thread, we really don't have the pieces (that we would part with anyways) to get it done
Reyes is going absolutely no where, In all likelihood Kelly is going no where
That leaves Weaver as a decent piece I suppose and I think they'd sacrifice Flaherty but I'm not sure how much value he'd bring
Wong might have a very, very small amount of value but Wacha and Gridchuk are almost worthless (especially Wacha)
Diaz was a flash in the pan last year IMO
and I doubt a team would put much value in him either. Pham is older than you'd expect, has an awful injury history, and a degenerative eye disease
The second reason is it just doesn't seem to be what we do anymore. Our current front office has always seeemed content to just move small pieces around in season to see what little value they can squeeze out of them but nothing more than that
The third reason and honestly the best not to make a trade for a significant star IMO is that putting Donaldson in the middle of the order does NOT fix this team. Our D/baserunning will still be one of the worst in the league, our bullpen will still be a mess, and we have a rotation that you never know what it's going to do on any given day
Not to mention that rotation would get significantly worse if we had to give up Lynn (one of our few players with much value to speak of) to get Donaldson
FTR, Wacha should have already but moved to the pen and Weaver called up to start but that's just my opinion

I don't see the Tigers getting much even if they pay all of that salary. What should a team give for a 34 year old pitcher with a 1.5 WHIP, albeit a former ace?

He had a great year last year, so teams would be banking on him finding that groove again.
Tigers have Alivia, Martinez, both of the Wilson's, and not much else as trade. They should dump Castellanos as well

He was one of the best pitchers in baseball in 2016 and still throws gas. Would anyone really be surprised if Verlander was nasty?

The Brewers are the surprise leaders of the National League Central as the All-Star break approaches, and Jon Morosi of MLB.com writes that they’ve begun doing “background work” on White Sox lefty Jose Quintana and Athletics righty Sonny Gray in advance of the non-waiver trade deadline.

Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein warned today that outside additions won’t solve the club’s woes, as Jesse Rogers of ESPN.com was among those to report. Epstein says the defending World Series champs “can’t force anything” at the trade deadline. Whatever changes to the roster are ultimately made, he says, the organization’s “biggest fixes are inside the clubhouse.”

Similarly, rival organizations are surely wonder whether the Pirates have any inclination to take offers on righty Gerrit Cole. There’s nothing definitive in that regard, but Jon Heyman of Fan Rag writes (among many other National League notes) that the Bucs are giving indication that Cole isn’t likely to be traded.
