People in MC buy kidnap insurance. I'm not sure they do that in Charlotte, Memphis, etc.

y could make it work with enough investment in security, the NBA could purchase its own 5* residential building to house players (both home and away) and build its own arena downtown in the safe district.

Mexico govt would be fully on board IMO and then they could work to expand the safe district block by block each year.

Also any player on the MC team could get an insane 75% salary kicker and they could wean it down by 10% each year to a normalized 20% kicker by year 10 or so.

If you have to do all this, probably don't do it.

It isnt Juarez or Tijuana

Bingo. Mexico City isn’t that bad. I’ve talked to some guys that play for the Rojos Diablos of the Mexican League. They said they are treated like rock stars, and mind you, these guys are former major leaguers or players who never made it. They can afford to live in rich areas of the city and not worry about the ghetto. It’s pretty much like a mega city in the US in that sense.

Tijuana and Juarez are a different story.

The issue isnt Mexico City. Its that there is a criminal apparatus that impacts every facet of society in the country. How can the league be confident that ownership or league officials wont be giving kickbacks to cartels to keep them away? How can we trust the integrity of the game when it comes to officiating games that cartels have money on? How can we trust game day security to not be compromised?

There is just so. much. money involved with the NBA. I just dont know how you can comfortably keep it removed from the cartels. Even if Mexico City is largely considered to be free of its influence as
of right now

Should be fairly easy for Mexico to carve out a safe zone that is 2 square miles especially if the soldiers who are selected are single guys. Just pay them super well and give them false identities. They could even be Mexican Americans whose entire families are in the US.

The very reason it's doable is that $80k per guardsman would is a great salary to them but peanuts to the NBA

The metro areas are basically the same. MC has about 3 mil more people in the MSA.

How can you trust that the government officials in charge of putting together the 2 square mile zone wont be on the cartel payroll? How can you trust that the guards in charge of protecting the zone wont be compromised by the cartel?

Liga MX seems to do just fine, and there is a growing baseball league. Liga MX makes about $569m in revenue per year, the NBA does $6.3b. Presumably they can set up the most basic of security precautions to ensure a safe game day experience and that refs aren't getting bribed.

Not saying the NBA should be expanding to Mexico City, they have more deserving US cities, but with the ever growing ex-pat population there and the fact that it is an absolutely massive metro area, it makes complete sense to look into it.

Staying in Roma, Polanco or Condesa is up there with any city in the world in terms of desirability. But sure going to OKC really revs the engine as a trip possibility.

Probably my favorite vacations have been to Mexico City. Last trip included a wrestling event in on of the arenas. Non stop laughter. Was awesome

Right. My reply was for the people that assume it’s some place where you can’t safely walk down the street. Cartel influence is everywhere in that country, including resort towns. I would legit think the areas of Mexico City in which these athletes live would be just as nice as any area in the states.

Is the tax rate the same there? I'd rather Seattle and Las Vegas get teams.
