Not from a talent standpoint. The talent pool has exceeded the team pool

Those guys would be gods in Mexico City. It is the largest city in North America. It has a lot of slums and can be dangerous. It also has insane wealth also. I think the biggest fear would be corruption.

Very apparent youve never been. Went in June, beautiful city and felt safer walking around than most US cities.

Mexico City is legit awesome. It could be doable IMO if the NBA worked with the Mexican government and basically gave every player and coach armed secret service details for both MC and the traveling teams.

Ritz Carlton, world class shopping food and entertainment all in downtown M.C. Must just stay in the main quadrant.

Mexico City actually has crazy rich areas, with Michelin Star restaurants and some of the highest end shopping anywhere. If you stay in those areas its safe and a much better city to live in than many already in the NBA.

If you go outside of those areas you could die pretty easily though

For sure.

I think the fear would be the cartels getting their tentacles into ownership, the players, or officials...or outright kidnapping some of them for gain.

I wouldn't normally do this to someone, but since you were ruining the NFL game thread this weekend by playing semantics with the Bills/Vikings bad call this is for you:

There are no Michelin star restaurants in Mexico City. Michelin doesn't cover Mexico.

"Michelin Star level restaurants", happy? They have multiple restaurants in the world's top 100.

TD never fails to disappoint. People here shitting on Mexico City as a road game trip when fricking Indiannapolis, Memphis, Sacramento, Charlotte, Milwaukee, etc all have teams.

Staying in Roma, Polanco or Condesa is up there with any city in the world in terms of desirability. But sure going to OKC really revs the engine as a trip possibility.

This.

My wife was extremely wary when we visited Mexico City for the first time back in 2019. But she absolutely loved Polanco, and we had a great time throughout the city.

Now she keeps asking when we're going to go back.

No way Mexico City gets an NBA expansion over Haiti.

You are a million times safer in Mexico City than you are in Detroit, Chicago, and Los Angeles

And they have NBA teams in those cities

Sending 20 year olds with millions of dollars to Mexico city is a brilliant idea.

My sister lived in Mexico City for 5 years.

She ended up having to buy 3 cars over the years and she wasn't rich. Dumpy cars, stolen. NBA lifestyle would be a deathwish in Mexico City.

NBA players should have chats with the USMNT how fun it is to play in Mexico. There would have to be a financial incentive for any player to sign...a bonus...like they do with Toronto for taxes.

Mexico City is no less a shithole than a lot of American cities

It has some very nice areas and crime isnt that bad

It isnt Juarez or Tijuana

Eh

MC has MUCH higher highs than many American cities not New York or LA...

And much lower lows than any American city.

They could make it work with enough investment in security, the NBA could purchase its own 5* residential building to house players (both home and away) and build its own arena downtown in the safe district.

Mexico govt would be fully on board IMO and then they could work to expand the safe district block by block each year.

Also any player on the MC team could get an insane 75% salary kicker and they could wean it down by 10% each year to a normalized 20% kicker by year 10 or so.
