Seems like it will give a bigger advantage to left handed pitchers when it comes to holding runners on base and using their pickoff throws more judiciously.

WTF?

Don’t want shifts, get hitters who have some actual ability to pull the ball.

Clear they want more speed in the game. Defensive ability at 2b is gonna become more important than it has been with shifting. The bigger bases and limiting pick off/step off moves is intended to invite more steal attempts.

Pitcher’s basically just have one pickoff attempt and then they’ll have to save the second attempt to keep the runner near the base. If they burn the second one, the runner is guaranteed a steal on the next pitch. What a stupid rule.

so....if you are a runner on 1st you get the pitcher to pick off twice and then leave early as frick and steal 2nd?

i mean im all for bringing back the steal but jesus that is dumb.

the others i can get behind somewhat, i hate the shift, but if the damn batters and the analytic guys would just get behind bunting to beat the shift it would work itself out.

At a minimum, all of these changes suck and won’t do anything to change the fan experience.

At a maximum, and more likely, they will completely change the game, make things more complicated causing more stoppages and make it worse.

I'm pretty sure a third pickoff is allowed. But if an out is not made it becomes a balk.

From ESPN:
Rubber disengagements

Pitchers can step off the rubber twice per plate appearance without penalty, but after a third step-off -- which does not result in a pickoff -- a balk will be called. In other words, a pitcher can throw over to first base up to three times, but the third attempt must lead to an out or the runner gets to advance a base. The disengagement rule resets when a runner gets to a new base. With no runners, a third step-off would result in a mound visit.

ESPN discussion of the proposed rule changes.

Yeah.. I think the 2 pick off attempts is going to be a problem.. other then that I don’t mind the changes. Will be nice to not see Austin Riley running across the diamond every couple of pitches haha.

Gonna be so funny when teams start to adapt

For instance when someone like 2018 Joey Gallo is up, move the 2B to right next to second base, move the RF to shallow RF, then shade LF and CF super right and it’s basically a shift leaving LF wide open

Might be a bad example but they’ll figure something out

So stupid

I’m glad I already quit watching MLB.

I’d be really pissed if I still cared.

Lord have mercy! Why don't they just shorten the mfricking game to 7 innings. Or two outs per inning. Or keep the batter from re-doing his batting gloves 10 times per at bat. Or how about speeding up the time it takes for the other team to get out on the field and pitch the first pitch. You have 60 seconds to get on the field on defense, if not, first batter is automatically walked. If the pitcher needs to warm up, do it while your team is batting.

The pitch clock is great. Nobody wants to see Pedro Baez play with himself on the mound for 3 minutes between pitches. It’s egregious. The rest I could do without

So they're trying to increase offense and shorten games at the same time. I don't see how that's going to happen. Typically, your shorter games come from pitchers duels.

A 15-second pitch clock with the bases empty and a 20-second clock with runners on

This is fine, but enforcement is going to be a bitch and might slow the game down even more at first. But if it can get the pitchers to work quicker than I think this could be a good change.

Don't love this. Runners will take advantage for sure. But I can live with it.

quote:

requirement by hitters to be in the batter's box and "alert" with eight seconds to go on the clock. Hitters are allowed one timeout per plate appearance

This is fine, but I think its a bit unnecessary. Hitters usually call timeout when the pitcher is taking forever anyway so this should be taken care of largely by the pitch clock.

quote:

Only two infielders will be allowed on each side of second base, with all four required to be on the dirt (or inner grass)

I hate this rule. If a defense wants to line all 7 fielders along the right field foul line they should be able to do it. The defense should be able to play where they think is best. The hitters can try and adjust and make them pay for a bad alignment. If the idea is that things like the 2 strike shift where the 3rd basemen runs over to short right field is taking too much time then that should already be addressed by the pitch clock.

quote:

Infielders cannot position themselves on the outfield grass before the pitch is thrown

Dumb. See above.

quote:

Bases will increase in size from 15 inches squared to 18

Fine, don't really care.
