This is terribly sad. How many more of our kids have to die before they outlaw bunting? It has no place in the game.

When I see coaches teaching kids to bunt like this it makes me want to strangle them! This death is due to bad coaching and that is it.
First off....that's a pretty harsh statement
Secondly....how do you know he taught the kids to bunt that way?? It's not beyond question to have a kid that isn't very experienced make a decision to turn and bunt the wrong way.
It's a tragic accident......but to say bad coaching killed this kid is just stupid

How do you know coaching didn't cause this? The coach could have very well taught him to bunt like in those pictures.

If he had been coached correctly he would have been bunting correctly. If he had been bunting correctly there is no way he could have been hit in the chest. You just don't let a kid bunt if he doesnt know how to. Coaching caused this.

Well, since you were born in 1979 tell me about all the LL games you saw in the 1950s.
If this is your response, you aren't worth arguing with
I'm sure ll in the fifties were light years ahead of today , just like the football players, basketball players, track stars and most sports athletes.

Ever heard of a kid making a mistake in a game? Please stop blaming something for which you don't know is true.

Competition was much higher back then. In my LL, one out of every 2 players trying out were accepted. The others could move down to a Rec dept. league if they wanted to but were not allowed to play LL.
The players today are bigger; just as people today are bigger. But when I go to youth league games I can clearly see that the skill levels are lower.
that is because you are watching little league games. To see the best players, you have to go watch travel teams

Maybe so, but who knows WHO the coach was. It's little league. Kids listen to their dads just as much as they listen to their coaches. So who knows who actually taught or didn't teach him how to bunt, or who even gave him the idea to bunt.
We have no idea. It's stupid to try to place any blame until we know more.

Died from commotio cordis
Local news video, interviewing an eyewitness
quote:
It is a form of ventricular fibrillation, not mechanical damage to the heart muscle or surrounding organs. The fatality rate is about 65%. It can sometimes, but not always, be reversed by defibrillation
quote:
From 1996 to spring 2007, the USA National Commotio Cordis Registry had 188 cases recorded, with about half occurring during organized sports
quote:
Defibrillation must be started within 3 minutes, and can only sometimes restore heart activity. Commotio cordis is the leading cause of fatalities in youth baseball in the US, with 2 to 3 deaths per year.
The risk would probably be reduced by improved coaching techniques, such as teaching young batters to turn away from the ball to avoid errant pitches, according to doctors.

The top kids and talent no longer play little league. Its all usssa and travel tourneys.
He isn't very informed

The teams in little league world series would get worked by local travel teams.

He probably wasn't coached to not drop the barrel of the bat (also seen in the picture posted earlier). It would be really hard to take one in the chest off the bat (not sure if that's what happened) if the barrel is not dropped.

True, the talent levels aren't even close really.

If a player does not know how to bunt you tell him he CANNOT bunt. No player is going to bunt if the coach tells him he cannot. It was the coaches fault 100%. This kid was a 13 yr old. If he was a 6yr old it may have been a different story but only the coach can be blamed for this.

I am around kids baseball more than anyone on this site. I know that it was the coaches fault.

Listen, a coach can tell a kid to bunt without realizing it is fricking LIFE or DEATH. Regardless of that fact, you DON'T know. Post when you have the coaches interview stating the fact that he should not have called the bunt because he did not teach him how to.
My dad taught me a lot of my baseball skills and I ignored some of my coaches and vice versa. I also looked at how the MLB players did it when it came to certain things such as pitching. I was a coach at one point as well, and for you to blame the coach soley is not right. You more than anyone apparently should know your kids have more going on then baseball.

You have NO idea what this kid was taught.....your just spewing BS. And you're also spewing BS about being around kids baseball more than anyone here. How would you even KNOW this??
I sure as hell HOPE you aren't around it more than I have been the last 15 years or so.....because you'd pretty much be living at the park.

How do you know what the coach taught him?
10 years olds don't exactly always use fundamentals they're taught, not even close.
