Wasn't McCarthy the starter at IMG, and was decent for a couple of years at Michigan? Since then, he has not been awful, but close to it.

I thought the Raiders were going to get Kyler to bridge to Mendoza.

JJ McCarthy = complete bust.

His team pulled a Jadaveon Clowney level trick on the Vikings front office.

He shouldn’t even have been drafted at all, much less top ten. He has never been good.

He averaged like 150 yards/game at Michigan behind one of the greatest o-lines ever. He basically was never called upon to win games for them. They were a run-first offense, and he was a consummate game manager.

You say Game Manager as if it's a bad thing. I mean all QB's in a manner, are Game Managers

I mean I never saw him much at Michigan or with Minnesota so I do not know anything really about arm talent and ability to get you into right place.

He definitely stinks now but might improve after some years learning how to actually play qb besides handoffs.

The Vikings essentially drafted a slightly more mobile version of Greg McElroy with a top 10 pick.

But good ones have the ability to go win you a game. He rarely had to do anything close to that at Michigan. He accounted for 4 Tds after Halloween that national title season. That's insane.

One of passes he threw in the Rose Bowl against Alabama that they showed during the NFL draft when he was coming out bounced off a defensive players helmet and they kept talking about such a great throw

There were plenty of retards on here that thought the Vikings were prudent for letting Darnold go in favor of McCarthy

Exactly. JJ was never called upon to lead the offense down the field on a 2 minute drill. He was never called upon to mount a big comeback. He never played in a game where the opposing team shut down the running game and forced him to throw to get the victory. He didn’t even get empty stats running up the score in blowouts. The best game managers are gunslingers when they need to be. JJ has never once shown he can do that.

“But he’s a winner! And Harbaugh says he’s a first round QB.”

Never mind the fact he threw the ball 8 times a game

Would love to bump some of those draft threads. All of them are locked now.

Some great takes in this one

I love OU Guys post acting like we were about to watch history in the making with JJ last year.

quote:

JJ McCarthy debut:

• 2nd Player with multiple Pass TD in Vikings debut
(Fran Tarkenton)

• 1st to overcome 10+ point deficit in 4th qtr and win in NFL debut since 1985
(Steve Young)

• 1 game started. 1 comeback win

Did you miss the Rose Bowl CFP game against Bama where JJ orchestrated a late 4Q 74 yard game tying drive? Believe there was barely a 1 minute left in regulation after that drive. Same game where he finished with 221 passing yards and three touchdowns, earning Rose Bowl Offensive Player of the Game honors.

99% of the world could see he was not worth that draft pick.

He is what he is.

The pick was a bust, though. Idk if I’d call him a bust. He was never promising on this level.
