t's mind-boggling. Michigan didn't want him throwing much, but nfl people are always reaching when it comes to the QB position
Agreed. Even if you just looked at his college stats, it always felt like they were: 16-23 for 173 yards, 2 TD or 1 TD, 1 rush TD.

There were plenty of retards on here that thought the Vikings were prudent for letting Darnold go in favor of McCarthy
I would bet 80% of this board said that after Darnold's last two games in 2024. But, it shows that you can't just ignore the sample size he put together over that full season. He may have choked a little in the Lions game, but the Rams playoff game was basically an ambush after they dropped from a 1 to a 5 seed or whatever it was.

I'm not saying this will happen with JJ, he probably does suck. But, how many guys are finally peaking on their third or fourth team like Darnold/Mayfield, Mac getting better at SF, etc.?

Stupid decision by Vikings. It’s established you aren’t winning anything with Murray.
McCarthy at least still has potential. Giving up on a guy who has 10 starts in his career and went 6-4. Dumb

True but those guys were with the Jets, Browns, and late stage Belichick. McCarthy is in what should be a pretty great situation for a young qb.

Well for one, those guys showed a lot more in their original situation than McCarthy has, both at the college level and their original team
Mayfield had issues being consistent but showed promise during his first couple years, just lacked consistency, had injuries, and the browns didnt like his cocky persona. People forget they were trying to sign him to an extension before deciding they wanted to godfather offer for Watson.
Darnold showed a ton of potential in NY early on before the wheels came off, and took him a few years to find back his groove and landed in two great situations and systems for him
Mac was a pro bowler and had the pats in the playoffs his rookie year before the situation around him deteriorated.
Also, and likely more importantly, those guys were in shite situations or systems who found their footing in QB friendly offenses out of the Shanahan system/tree
McCarthy started in that QB friendly system with legit weapons and can’t seem to develop. So it’s hard to imagine a different scenario that he could move to that would drastically change his chances of the light coming on.

i think its fair to announce: JJ McCarthy = complete bust.
I’m not ready to call him a bust at this point, but people like Schefter pointing out his 6-4 record as a starter clearly didn’t watch those games.
He still has a very long way to go before being a starting QB in the NFL.

He started 10 games.
Team went 6-4.
The entire advantage of having a QB on a rookie deal start is it’s a huge advantage in the cap.
If McCarthy is even just average, it’s a huge boom for the team paying the QB that little.
Stsrting Kyler Murray is the equivalent of tanking. Not sure why you’d do that with a 3rd year QB.

He threw 12 picks in those 10 games. And got hurt both years.

They are paying Kyler even less than that, so it’s not really any difference from a cap perspective. All that extra cash for roster building is useless if your QB sucks or can’t stay on the field.
They already had a roster that was able to win 13 plus games. Gave those reigns to McCarthy and flushed it down the toilet. I’m sure they would’ve loved for McCarthy to win the job in this battle and rise to his draft pick pedigree, the fact that he couldn’t win the job in those conditions again just points to how little he’s been able to show the staff since arriving

Why? Murray is very talented, and he's in a great situation now. I expect him to have a huge year as long as he stays healthy

They clearly don't think he's even average. Also the Vikings are paying Kyler like 1/4th of what McCarthy makes.

Because the coach, and most importantly the rest of the team, thinks he sucks and don't want their time wasted. No way Jefferson wants to go out there with a qb struggling to throw for 170 every week for another season.

Hate to break it to the football world, but even Spencer Rattler would be named over McCarthy.
