Kareem would win 6 championships to go with a record 6 MVP awards along the way and he is regarded at worst as a top 5 player of all time, if not as the very greatest. Kareem had a hilarious response when asked who is the GOAT during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and he also spoke about where the league is now, compared to his time.

"Earlier on, you might get 10 3-point shots in a game. Now there's 10, 20 3-point shots in a quarter. It seems like its a 3-point shooting contest. People enjoy it and you know they should. I am still the all-time leading scorer in the NBA and I only made one 3-point shot."

Kareem with another epic quote in what was honestly one of the best interviews we've seen in recent time. He also made a joke about the best topping for a hot dog being the tears of the 1985 Celtics after they lost the Finals to the Lakers. The 1985 Celtics were just one in the long line of victims of Kareem's greatness as he won Finals MVP in that series by averaging over 25 points per game.

He sees his reign at the top coming to an end...trying to find excuses to keep his name synonymous with the NBA's all-time leading scorer once LeBron passes him.

More like I became the all time leading scorer b/c i played in the league for 20 years and miraculously was never injured. He had only 2 seasons where he played less than 74 games, and he still played 60+ in those 2 seasons.
15 seasons where you miss less than 3 games a season is a miracle. I know guys were tougher back then, but to avoid any type of major injury for that long is no where near normal, especially for a 7 footer.

To an extent, but it was a much easier league to play in as well. It was a lot less physical and less physically demanding.

In the 70s and 80s you had a LOT less defense, fewer physical specimens to deal with, and it was just a much softer game.

People like to show clips of cheap shots in the 80s, but (1) these were outlier events and (2) that came at the very end of his career.

*ETA: Kareem is god-tier, just in case anyone thinks I am disparaging one of the top 5-7 basketball players of all time. He's just also an annoying, whiney bitch who isn't nearly as intelligent or introspective as he imagines himself to be.

it was literally illegal to play help defense most of Kareems career

People always talk about how tough defenses were but man, it wasn't until the mid-80s that the defensive rules ever started to make any sense. It used to be a technical foul for a defensive player to sag off of a 3 pt shooter.

Yea but that wasn't his game and it wasn't going to be. He was a 7 foot monster down low.

So was Shaq...and Wilt and on and on.

Kareem shot 56% from 2PT range for his career, which is 10 made shots on 18 attempts... which means there would never be a reason for him to shoot 3's.

Shaq shot 58% from the field for hi career.

Again... if I'm 7 foot 1 or 2 and skilled, why would I step back there and put up bad shots when I can get you 25 points per game staying close to the goal and getting to the free throw line???

20.16 points per 18 shots or 1.11 points per shot

For 3 pointers...

@40% = 21.6 points per 18
@38% = 20.52 points per 18

The inflection point is 37.33% from 3

So to match the shot efficiency of one of the top 3 centers of all time, you just need to shoot 37.33% from 3.

When you add FT% into more of a True Shooting %, it gets worse for big men and post games (b/c few shoot FTs well enough due to lack of skill)

This is why you see so many 3s today

It’s pretty amazing considering he had to drag Walton’s arse up and down the court every night.

Yeah, but Kareem's name isn't associated with a female hygienic product like "somebody" is, so he has that going for him.
