Daniels was arguably the best passer in college football this year. He was definitely the most efficient passer.

They could trade fields for a 2 and end up with Williams and another player that both bust and be worse off.

Fields isn’t great but he’s a middle of the pack qb with upside.

They could easily trade down twice and get a haul of picks and players

Sure, or they could end up with the next Mahomes and another All Pro player...

You know what's a horrific idea? Not drafting a highly rated QB with the #1 pick for a middle of the pack QB.

And still not have a top 20 NFL QB who you'll have to pay big money soon.

Over the past 3 years the Bears are 16-34.

Over the past 3 years the Bears are 10-27 with Fields as the starter.

Over the past 3 years the Bears are 6-7 with someone other than Fields at QB.

Honestly Chicago now has a good enough defense to ride them to a championship with an adequate offense and some luck.

I could see them trade down and fortify with a defensive lineman and another weapon for Fields.

Daniels isn't a throwing QB? Guess you missed this year

They'd still need that adequate QB.

Do you think GMs don't have access to the stats the OP posted?

I don't think Fields is the answer, but I still think the better move is to trade down from the first pick. I just don't think Williams will work out long term either. If you can get a good to great haul and stay in the top 10, you would get a good QB plus some more assets to fill out a roster with a lot of holes.

With Fields, you would have to assume trading him prior to the draft would give them a little more leverage, so I would dump him right away. Even if he ends up being serviceable, he is close enough to getting out of his rookie contract so you might as well restart that clock since good QB's on their first deals are a cheat code with the salary cap.

So you are grouping Lamar and Fields in the same level of effectiveness?

Wasn't there some stat regarding Fields around his draft that he threw something like 10 or fewer passes to his second read?

ETA: that would seem to track with him holding onto the ball longer than other QBs.

He is not their answer, and if they cash in for even more 1sts and 2nes. You do it.

He cannot read the field or make a progression to save his life. It's why he's a 1 td a game qb. He can make a de miss and find some one wide open, then can't find a wide open wr while in pocket with time

I’m not sure Williams is any better than fields Bryce young looked awful this year not all his fault

Either way, Williams plus $50m in cap space is almost certainly as good as fields on a non rookie contract

So there’s a good bit of upside to resetting before you end up 6-11 and have to be in qb purgatory

conundrum

Trade him and pick a QB, it's pretty simple. He isn't the answer. He still has some trade value now too so it's not the worst thing in the world.

If I was a Bears fan, prior to this season I'd probably have been up in the air on it, but this season would have convinced me they need to move on. Regardless of who they think the top guy is, they need to draft a QB.

I fail to see the conundrum. Fields has had 3 seasons to figure it out. He has yet to show any confidence that he can be a franchise QB. This is a deep draft for quarterbacks. If the Bears fail to draft a QB this year, they deserve to remain irrelevant for the next 15 years.

How long do you have with their defense though? Will a drafted QB become better than what Fields can be in year two?

I think Caleb Williams is better than Fields day 1.
