re: Josh Hamilton: Rangers fans are spoiled - DFW is not a true baseball town

No shite DFW isn't a baseball town when the team in it has only been relevant for a few years EVER. But the Rangers were really starting to get a lot of support and excitement until the last half of the year when the entire organization quit.
you Josh. One of the most fake pieces of shite in sports. At least act like a piece of shite if you are one. Don't go around claiming to be all godly and of a higher order.

you're really comparing Hamilton to Bonds and Reggie Jackson?
Well, he's not as good as those two, so it's even more likely a team would get tired of his act. Which kind of supports my case, not yours.

you think TX got tired of him? because of his attitude? again, laughable

Nope. During their World Series run(s) they were just as popular or more than the Cowboys at the time.

no it isnt
there were rumors of the Rangers being sick of his shite and not willing to give him a huge long term deal going back to the AllStar break.
sorry man, they were definitely sick of his shite by the end of it all.
Him not even giving them the courtesy to match was the cherry on top of his shithead attitude that poisoned the team.
Posted on 2/18/13 at 10:17 pm to Tiger Ryno
Yeah, Boston would have run him out of town 4 years ago
Hell, the fans don't like Ellsberry because they think he's :soft:.

It was widely speculated and reported BEFORE the 2012 season that the organization was preparing to move one without him after the season.
This was coming off of back to back world series appearances.
The guy can't even be trusted to carry more than like 20 bucks in his wallet. He had two publicized relapses while he was on the team. At a point the organization was sick of his crap, even if the fans only got to that point later.

is that why there was backlash when they werent allowed to match their offer?
or the fact they lost their best hitter by far, and couldnt replace him?
lol. they'd kill to have him

Lester, I generally love your posting, but you're wrong on this one. JD has been shopping Ham around since the end of the 2011 season. Regardless of whether he gave the team an opportunity to counter is irrelevant. JD wasn't going to pay him that much. like I said earlier, the Angles better have hired a grade A babysitter

oh ok. So all the different Dallas sports radio guys that had been saying the Rangers were sick of Josh being a jackass and were probably not going to keep him just made it up?
Seems legit.
and there was a backlash not b/c they were dead set on keeping him but b/c they thought it was incredibly disrespectful for him to not even give them the opportunity to match him after protecting his high maintenance druggie arse for so long.
Josh once again showed he is a selfish brat all about himself.

What backlash? There was backlash against Josh for lying, but no backlash against the Rangers for failing to sign Hamilton. Ranger fans have given the organization a complete pass on it (and I do agree they had a terrible offseason, but that has nothing to do with Hamilton -- that was not one of their mistakes)
Of course it was personality driven. Sure, he was a fragile player who only once played a full season, but when healthy, as you said, he put up MVP numbers. Yet the Rangers didn't make any effort to sign him and the fanbase was largely supportive of that decision. The only time the Rangers got interested in resigning him was when he went for a lot less than anyone thought and to a division rival. Then, the Rangers made a half-hearted effort to make an offer, and the fans blamed Hamilton, not the Rangers.
They wouldn't kill to have him. If they wanted him, he'd still be in Texas. 5 years, $125 million is well below what the Rangers were offering in April in both dollars and term. They just got tired of his act, and the numbers didn't justify the headache. and the fans have almost universally backed the team over the player. Which this same town has NOT done over the Mavs and Tyson Chandler. Or the Stars and James Neal and Brad Richards (if there were Stars fans to be upset, but the few who do exist are still pissed about the Neal deal).

Hell, the Rangers outdrew the Angels last year. I guess that means DFW has bigger baseball fans than Anaheim by Hamilton's logic?
Or perhaps the Ballpark at Arlington seats north of 4,000 more peeps. Either way, as long as Hamilton produces for the Angels I'll be a fan. LA is a "baseball town" but it is the Dodgers' turf. Anaheim and the OC are all Angels though. Angel Stadium is 31 miles southeast and a world away from Chavez Ravine.

So is L.A. a baseball town?

Absofrickinglutely. I hate the Doyers, but L.A. is definitely a baseball city. Town is a bit diminutive.

I know the Dodgers get good attendance but for some reason I equate Lakers to L.A. before Dodgers.

except what he really should have said is
If a team for any sport isn't winning and is signing overpriced busts they will never get the love more successful teams get that are winning.
and like it or not, MLB (and every other sport) is firmly behind the NFL in pecking order in every city in America.
That was actually me, there is a difference between getting 'more love' when winning, and still being relevant in town when losing. Even on the skids teams like Boston, St. Louis, Chicago (Cubbies) and Braves pull fans. Those are baseball towns.
I love my Orioles to death, but Baltimore is no longer a baseball town, 15 years of suck will do that. If we had slumped for 2, 3 years after our run in 97, there would never have been a drop off in Orioles fans.

if this were true, he'd be gone, and they would have gotten something for him
in reality, he came out in 2012 and was the best player in the league. Everyone loved him. Thats the way it was for most of his career in Texas.
he deals with a few issues in the 2nd half, and all of a sudden he's Reggie Jackson and Barry Bonds, and Texas doesnt need him any more.
You know the fans he is talking about in the original post? That is you guys. Clueless dipshits with a "what have you done for me lately" attitude.
Did you know over the last 2 months of last season he hit 14 HR 44 RBI & had a .911 OPS? Yea, really sounds like a guy who didnt give a shite. BUt of course this is a message board, and people will always make baseless assumptions. Good luck with leaning on Nelson Cruz(how can people like him if they didnt like Hamilton is beyond me...he's always hurt!!! and just got link to PEDs!!!) & Adrian Beltre.

im still laughing you compared him to reggie jackson and barry bonds.
"personality driven" is a pretty broad label, and certainly doesn't fit in with the 2 above.
was he injured? Sure. Did he have an addiction problem? Sure. Did he not play full seasons? Sure. He won the MVP playing in 133 games, though, and finished 5th last year playing in 148. And 7th another time his 1st full season with TEX.
Now way injury, his age, and addiction factors in the RAngers not signing him? yes. I don't label that as personality driven
Was he a dickhead like Reggie Jackson and Barry Bonds; which in the end led them not to re-sign him? frick no.
Baloo, even if he were just 2 years younger than what he is, he would have NEVER even hit free agency. He'd still be a Ranger. So dont give me the personality bull crap.

Boy, it'll break my heart if Josh Hamilton, one of the most me-first and coddled athletes of our time, thinks I'm a bad baseball fan. I don't know if I can keep on going with my life. And while Bonds was a jerk, he really wasn't that hard to deal with. He wanted two lockers and a special chair? So what? That's pretty standard for superstars. Oh, he wanted to control the thermostat? There's a guy in my office who does that, and he's not Barry Bonds. He didn't get along with Jeff Kent? NO ONE GOT ALONG WITH JEFF KENT. By superstar standards, Bonds wasn't really hard to manage at all. He showed up, hit the crap out of the ball, and went home. Bonds didn't need a team employee to follow him home either and make sure he didn't have more than $20 in his wallet. Hamilton was far more high maintenance.
The same "what have you done lately" fans love Michael Young, who hasn't hit his weight for three years. Why? Because he's been a longtime organizational guy and he's said and done everything right. He gets a pass because he's earned a pass. Nellie Cruz gets a pass because he was passed over as a AAAA player until he turned 27, and he then went nuts. Sure, he's hurt all the time and that's frustrating as all hell, but he's a guy who has given the fans a lot more than they ever expected. They give David Murphy a pass for being unable to hit lefties because he starts the year on the bench and ends up getting 450 AB's every year because everyone else is so damn fragile.
Hamilton came to the Rangers on his second chance and used up about five of them, and then committed the worst sin a player can commit: the appearance of lack of effort. And he STILL got a pass until his final days in Texas. And now he wants to bitch about that? The sheer balls on that guy. The team, media, and fans bent over backwards to protect that guy, and he takes potshots on his way out the door. I wasn't going to boo him, but I certainly am now.
And… wow. He had a great August clumped between two lousy months and one pretty good month.
June: 223/318/436
July: 177/253/354
August: 310/368/575

Yeah, I’m just blown away by that production. Please. Let me offer that player $25 million per year. People didn’t turn on Josh because they became spoiled or any such nonsense. They soured on him because having him on your team is exhausting. It’s a different story every damn month, and it just starts to wear on you. He’s not worth the trouble. Few players are.
