He's right. If the players were white, owners and GM's wouldn't care one bit about maximizing profit. It's all racial.

The Raptors did just take a bit of a PR hit when they traded one of their most loyal and best players ever.

Fans and players alike had harsh critiques

I'm not sure how true this is. I think owners and GMs get their fair share of backlash when they make moves the fans don't like. Sure fans get pissed, but that's because they invest their time, money and emotions into following a sport.

While I believe more people understand the business of modern sports more than ever before, if a front office or player forces an unpopular move, it still taps into basic feelings of betrayal and greed with fans. I doubt there's much of a racial component behind it.

Every time there's a work stoppage in any sport, the overwhelming majority of fans are upset at the African-American athletes and not the rich, white owners who are squeezing every last dollar they can -- who are already profitable and are already rich.

I mean....I blame the players every single time because without the owners they don’t have a job here. The owners and the league have the power.

The owners don’t need the paycheck from the team to get by, the players do, hell, Delonte West had to work at an Office Max or some shite during the last lockout.

And no, i’ll never sympathize with a professional athlete regarding their pay or what they ‘deserve’ financially.

His comparison is stupid because nobody cares about the owner or gm. Those guys aren’t celebrities. The ones who reach celebrity status get criticized for everything just like coaches get criticized for everything. Consider Jerry Jones.

Well the players get backlash bc we wanna see them compete J. We don’t wanna see guys spitting in the face of the spirit of competition to form super teams. I love the warriors and think they are great for the league. but for players having to make a super team a la lebron in Miami is kinda an admission that you couldn’t get your title any other way. The owners goal is to make money in most cases so we don’t judge the owner the same way for making the super team.

Most fans are fans of the team not the players. They see what’s good for their team and not for players. It is pretty easy JJ.

this is not the case in the NBA. Tons of individual player fan boys.

Dammit. I liked Redick.

So you're saying you can't like him anymore because you disagree with one view of his?

Exactly. JJ doesn’t have a point here.

Eh, he sort of has a point. People accept business decisions from owners and GM's that place $ and wins above loyalty. A player absolutely gets more backlash from placing money and wins over loyalty.

I'm less sold on the racial component. A lot of people just simply think that players should be loyal. You see the same criticism in college. A coach leaves prior to a bowl game, it's a blip. A player sits to preserve his draft status, he gets criticism for disloyalty.

The correlation to race is more about how owners and GM's are generally a whiter popultion, but correlation doesn't always mean causation.

Also look at recruiting boards when a kid decommits and goes elsewhere. People go mental.

Elway got tons of backlash for threatening to play baseball instead of play for the Colts. Gretzky was called a traitor for leaving Edmonton. This happens in all sports, and it's nothing new.

Gordon Hayward got his fair share of outrage for doing what was best for him in FA.

Not saying Redick is completely wrong, but it's not that black and white. Pun intended.

True. Also hurting his argument here is that the GM responsible for the particular trade that sparked his discussion is Masai Ujiri, who is black.

I think a bigger part of it is that players are visibly rich and in front of them all the time so there is a type of contempt that some uninformed fans will have for them complaining in any way about their circumstances. The predominantly white MLB players faced significant hostility when they went on strike in 1994.

This is beyond stupid. Owners/gms receive a shite ton of backlash all the time for stupid contracts given out in free agency. Nobody blames the player for getting the money. And no, pointing out that paying timofey mozgov $16 million/year is stupid isn't blaming the player.

I remember all of the football strikes since the 70s and honestly never associated them with African Americans. Never really gave that part of it a thought.

This.

I'm pretty goddamn tired of people trying to make everything into a race deal.

I'm not sure exactly how I feel on this. I mean, how many people dislike Eli Manning because he refused to go play in San Diego? But at the same time, basketball is just so different because of the impact one guy can have on the team and there's not a comparison I can think of at the moment of a top 3 white athlete leaving his team that hasn't won a championship, to go to another city.

I'm sure it's happened in baseball, I'm just not smart enough to think of it. We'll know more after Bryce Harper leaves for the Yankees this spring.

Against his will? Big Boy signed that contract, for a fat check, and immediately became a piece of property.
Was anybody holding a gun to his head?
