It's small town north Louisiana and it was involving a guy everyone knew at the time was going to the NBA. If you don't think every local official and resident worked in lockstep to keep that shite under wraps, I don't know what to tell you.

There's quite the gap between being a "bad" message board poster and having sex with a 12 year old.

Couldn’t he still be charged? Seems like it would be pretty easy to prove guilt

But that’s not how it works

The state decides to press charges, not the victim. This would have been easy even with ZERO real cooperation from the victim

DNA match, boom Karl you are guilty

I dont think statutory rape was a law back then, so the parents would have had to press charges

IIRC it wasnt a one time thing with her and malone, they had a relationship that went on for quite a while that her parents knew about but didnt approve of

According to Bell, with Malone being a neighbor — Summerfield's population is only a few hundred — her family did not wish to see him jailed, especially since he would then be unable to provide any support for Demetress at all.

That's even grosser.

Sounds like he was creeping on her for awhile being a neighbor.

Age of consent has been a law since at least the 50s

Why would something that happened 40 years ago be talked about a lot?

Or.. maybe that turns you on, Broski. Maybe that's how you get your kicks. You and your good time buddies.

But you could get married at 12 in Mississippi back then.

See Jerry Lee Lewis...they changed it to 15 when he married his 13 year old cousin and now I believe its 21.

right
it appears the family chose not to pursue criminal charges in 1984 and I dont think statutory rape was a law, so the DA could not have stepped in. I doubt her family told anyone in law enforcement about it at all. it didnt come out that bell was malone’s kid until 1996 when they sued him for paternity and he settled. statutory rape became a law later on so after he or one of his brothers were proven to be the father there was nothing the DA couid do about it after the fact

they did a paternity test on malone in 1996, probably a blood test
came back 99% one of the malone brothers

no DNA testing in 1984

Idk what's worse. The fact that he impregnated a pre-teen girl. Or that he wasn't even man enough to be in the child's life

Absolutely not. DNA/RNA testing is easy now, we have some tests that run in minutes but more accurate results take much more time but DNA matching wasn't a thing at all until the mid 80's and hardly anyone could do it.

Blood typing without using DNA is very difficult to PROVE paternity, but it is really easy to use it to rule out paternity. Most people only know about the ABORh typing but there are a couple dozen antigens you can test for.

The statute of limitations expired a long time ago and a civil lawsuit won’t be filed against him because believe it or not, Malone and his son have actually became very close in recent years.

Malone has done some amazing things for residents of Louisiana and Mississippi that we never hear about on the news.

I doubt the charity and recovery work will ever make up for getting a minor pregnant - but it appears he is trying.

We all make mistakes - I am sure Malone realizes how bad this was - but by all accounts now, he has good relationships with all of his children and trying to strengthen that bond.

Yep - he screwed up for sure - but at least he is trying to atone for he messed up actions 40 years ago.

This still goes on today - the number of barely teen girls that get pregnant - while living in extreme rural / poverty stricken areas would make your stomach turn. Not saying it exonerates Malone but it shows no one has done anything to improve that culture.
