He might be in there at some point. Not anytime soon

He will eventually get in via a veteran's committee or the like.

My favorite college defensive player of all time. I could watch his highlights all day.

Few things in life I want more than Tyrann to eventually be a coach at LSU.

Honey Badger will be a hall of famer. Look what he did with this size. He will be a lock

Something to consider when comparing these two. When Polamalu played, teams were passing less and running more than they are now. He had less opportunities for interceptions and less opportunities for tackles in his position. This is not a knock on honey badger.

. Tore his other ACL on an INT in 2015 when he, at the time, was one of the favorites to win NFL DPOY

I was coming to post how this injury specifically altered the trajectory of his legacy. Without that ACL tear he's a no-doubt HOF guy b/c he was winning DPOY that year.

TM is a great pro and in the hall of very good. But hall of fame? I never saw him as a disrupting force that guys like Reed or Polamalu were in the NFL. Guys you specifically game plan for.

It’s amusing that the knock against TM is that he didn’t end up being the best safety of all time.

He got a hell of a shout out and recommendation from the phat man today.

quote:

Andy Reid began his daily press remarks by publicly acknowledging Mathieu's recent retirement. The former All-Pro safety was a franchise leader for a Chiefs defense that delivered the team's first Super Bowl victory in 50 years.

“Just a shout out to Tyrann for a great career,” Reid said. “What a great career he had. The game will miss him, miss his energy—definitely an energy giver, a great leader.”

“Not only did Reid praise Mathieu’s past, he also looked forward to his potential future—as a coach. “Hopefully, he gets into coaching, because he'd be a heck of a coach if he decides to go that way,” said Reid. “He'd be tremendous, but we wish he and his family all the best going forward.

Is Ed Reed the barometer for the HOF?

Mathieu was on the all-decade team as voted on by the HOF. That’s a pretty good indication he’s at worst borderline given the induction rates of players on all-decade teams. Mathieu was also the favorite to win DPOY in 2015 before tearing his ACL in week 14. He was captain of 4 different teams. He was 1st team all pro 3 times. Was he the best safety of all time? No, but that’s not what the qualifications are for the HOF. It was also pretty damn hard to game plan for him because he was like a pocketknife. He was used in so many different ways which is what made him so unique and why he was so good

The league average for passing attempts per game hasn’t really changed all that much from when Polamalu started in 03 to now.

For reference
LINK

It was 32.2 in 2003 and 32.7 last year. It went up for a few years but came back down. INT rates were actually higher when Troy came into the league than they are now

That’s interesting and I’m a bit surprised. But thanks for that info.

To me the issue should be that Polamu should be considered a borderline gate keeper hall of Famer. John Lynch probably shouldn’t be in. It should be the other worldly elite guys. Like Ed Reed with all those career picks, or Dawkins with almost a 1000 tackles and 40 forced fumbles. But because we then in turn consider Polamu a 1st round hall of famer, then guys like Mathieu get in.

There’s not a hall of fame in any sport that exclusive. I don’t know why people always make these arguments as if the Pro Football HOF is easy to get into.

One big defensive stat left off of that graphic is tackles for loss. Polamalu had 56 while Mathieu only had 16. ETA: Disregard. Mathieu actually had 45. Fkn, AI

In 22 more games- fewer turnovers, fewer tfl

Troy P obviously wins…

but from the 2015-2025 decade following reed-polamalu what safeties are solidly ahead of him?

I'll give you another DB's resume:

2x SB champion

2x All-Pro (1st team)
1x All-Pro (2nd Team)
3x Pro Bowl*
NFL All-decade Team 1970s

NFL record for most interceptions in a game (4)

Should this player be in the Hall?
