I know it sucks for the fans sometimes, but there isn’t that big an upside to situations like Zion not coming back in the game last night. So what, we lost game 3 of 82

I'd be curious to know the average NBA career length off all-star caliber players and if there were any changes over the years

Violence is way down compared to the 70s 80s and 90s. It's risen again since the pandemic, but it was way down over the course of the last 40 to 50 years. It just doesn't seem like it because of the internet and social media. We actually see all of the violence now because most of it's documented.
There used to be years when New Orleans would routinely eclipse or approach 400 murders and 6000 armed robberies.
Now when there is 200 murders in New Orleans it's like a decade long record etc.
Violence is down, the population is docile for the most part so now the government does what they want with little resistance.
That's why they tried to make a big deal over the capitol protest. Even though there was no violence they made it seem like 911 terror attack.

Analytics and sports medicine have changed.
Prolonging careers and major injury avoidance is what they go for now.
In 1971, the Baltimore Orioles had four 20-game winners. Jim Palmer, Dave McNally, Pat Dobson, and Mike Cuellar.
Dobson had an 11 year career. He threw 280 innings twice, and had his last 200 inning year in year 10.
Cuellar had a 15 year career and threw 290 innings three times. He threw over 250 in year 13.
McNally had a 14 year career, threw 290 innings in 1970 and threw 200 innings in his 13th season.
Palmer had a 19 career and threw 200 innings in years 2 and 17. Now that's longevity. In between those years, he threw 300 innings four times.
The major league leader in 2021 threw 221 innings.
You could be right about a reliance on metrics, but I doubt guys today have longer careers. Most old timers like me probably just think they're pussies.

so they are getting the exact opposite result of what they are going for? Todays players have shorter careers and more major injuries. Wouldn't they have changed strategies by now?
None of this is true and the analytics show that.

They do, on average.
There are tons of Dot Charts and whatnot out there on it.

Zion is like 23 and has missed more games than like every All NBA in the 90s did in their entire career minus like Grant Grant Hill
Ditto for Embiid Durant AD KD Kyrie Kawhi etc etc

What does this have to do with the AVERAGES in the NBA?
On Average.
He tore a meniscus and broke his foot. 30 years ago a guy his size's career would be over with a broken foot.

There’s a direct correlation between the rise of Steph Curry and teams shooting 40+ three pointers a game and the general softness of the NBA.
So yeah, it’s Curry’s fault

So, it's the sports medicine why they can't last all season today? You would think the opposite. That doesn't make sense...
I was speaking more along the lines of monitoring and taking care of these guys

One thing to keep in mind is how physical the game was back then. Defenses had different rules and players got beat up pretty good. Jordon rules too, he was a marked man and just kept getting back up and overcame it. Detroit teams wow they hurt some people. Put todays players on teams back then and no whining to refs like now just hard BB. They were some tough SOB’s back then

Jesus the old timers on this board are fricking dumb
Injury prevention is a major part of sports medicine now (and for the last 20 years), and that's arguably more important than treating existing injuries

But he’s said back in the 80’s and 99’s, guys lasted longer without injury… and played more games back before newer sports medicine… Smart guy..

A lot of really talented players that aren't durable they're trying to preserve.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was the wokest of the woke and played 20 years at a high level while dragging Lanier and Walton (also woke) up and down the court.

In 1903, the Boston Red Sox staff threw 148 complete games

They played through minor injuries until they compounded and they ended up with more serious career ending injuries. Or they just used their bodies up until they were cripples in old age. Today's athletes will be much healthier in retirement than previous generations, that sounds like a good thing to me.

Lol sports medicine is so advanced the players can’t play as much?
