Most people become fans of a college team prior to being old enough to attend one.

Even better. If you become a fan of a team while they're shitty and stick with them, you're a real fan.
My crew bought our first season tickets for the Saints the year after the 1-15 season.

My dad graduated from northwestern state. I went to tech. WTF cares? I grew up a Tigers fan in large part from watching games with my dad. Does it really matter?

Are you a fan of any major league sports team? Can you prove some affiliation to said team? GTFO

Notre Dame had the Catholic following around the US, so I understand it.

Rooting for teams in other states where you have no connection to whatsoever reeks of front runners; where you pick the team because they are winning and your local team is not.

Catholic who grew up in GA... Never been a Notre Dame fan in my life. At my parochial only a handful of Notre Dame fans. Mostly, UGA, Ga Tech, UNC Clemson fans . This was in late 90s

Why would I care?

I know huge LSU fans that didn’t attend and I know people who attended that couldn’t care less about LSU sports.

i've been an LSU fan my entire life, but i never attended... i purposefully avoided going b/c i knew i would have failed out and never accomplished what i wanted to do, had i gone there... i was too immature and would have been way too involved in extracurriculars to ever achieve what i was trying to achieve in undergrad

College football is like the Premier League in that it’s all about passion for the local team. Well that’s at the core of it anyway.

Can you imagine a 8 year old sitting at an LSU game with his dad and his dad says “Enjoy it while you can. When you turn 18 you’ll have to forget all about LSU unless you enroll there”

Good q - I really don’t understand college fandom if you (or an immediate relative) did not attend. I saw it a lot growing up in south and west TX with UT fans who never sniffed the school.

Saw that- there is hope! Need a stadium like SMUs - smaller and high-end.

I attended a DIII state school in Wisconsin and then went to Florida for graduate school. I have little to no emotional ties to the Gators like I do for the Badgers. The only rooting interest I have whatsoever for any Florida programs are the ones where I know people who are still involved making it “rooting for my friends” more so than the team itself.

My rule is simple around this:

1) You can root for whatever college teams you want.

2) However, you can only refer to the team by saying “WE” in conversation if you played at school OR graduated from school OR work at school.

Why does it matter? Only thing that grinds my gears is when people “hate” the local teams for no other reason than everyone else likes them. Couple people I went to school with were very vocal anti saints/LSU just because everyone else liked them. That annoys me.

am I in the wrong for thinking this is weird? Idk. I grew up a UCLA fan and still am but I will never root for them over A&M
I guess it depends on the situation. In your case those two are “on the same level” so it may “matter more.” I went to ULM and will always pull for ULM first but at the end of the day I know anytime we play LSU we’re getting the brakes beat off of us. I grew up a tiger fan and will go to my grave a tiger fan. I wasn’t a ULM fan until I decided that’s where I was going.

In all honestly with as much as ULM athletics has let me down as a fan if I didn’t compete there and give as much of myself as I did I probably just wouldn’t care.

Geography has never determined fandom in my mind. Loyalty determines that. It makes no difference to me whether someone attended the school or not.

I live in BR, went to grad school at LSU. But when it comes to college football, I'm a Nebraska fan. I have no affiliation to the university and I never lived in Nebraska, but hey've been my favorite team since I was a kid and nothing is gonna change that.

ND is the exception. If you attend the university or were raised in the state where the team resides is normal. I don't understand someone with absolutely no ties to a team that roots for them. Like someone born and raised in Ohio who roots for the University of Texas without having attended a game or even set foot in Texas. That's odd. Especially when you have a top 5 team in your state
