Haven't read this whole thread because it's too long. I've brought up this point before. The problem is with the playing partner. When I played with a cheater it was very insulting to him if I played totally honest golf. He was a nice guy so I cheated once in a while to make him happy.

I now have a regular partner who plays strict rules like I do. It's wonderful because you have to get very creative to get out of awful situations. We played today. I took 5 extremely high risk shots that would normally result in 1 success. I hit all 5 of them. My score was an unimpressive 101. But as I fall asleep tonight I'll think about those 5 shots that never would have happened if I just picked the ball up and moved it.

98% of the time I play there is money on the line. Cheating/ lying about scores will get you kilt. 2 off the 1st tee, no mulligans, down in rough, bump it in the fairway.

I generally go with the flow of people I'm playing with. If there's no driving range. Two off the first and float one mulligan on the front 9. Roll it if you need to avoid hitting a root . The only thing I really have a problem with is returning to tee for stroke and distance. Need to really speed up play and that is not going to help. We usually drop at point of entry and take a stroke penalty

I imagine your index is actually lower than what you think because of max shot rules.

Huh, maybe so, I don't really wanna mess with it because I don't feel like I am good enough to play much lower than a 9.6 index

If you can determine where the ball went OB, you can drop there and play that ball is if it were you provisional tee shot and play your 4th shot from that point!

There ya go. Put me down for a snowman. I'm not going back to a tee box. Anything to keep the flow going

Awesome Sig pic, took me a second to realize what it was. I can do that with a wedge myself.
No I can't I trust me I took a small bucket and tried.

I'm confident I could slice it that much with an 8 iron or something, don't think I could control it though

I think some courses incorporate this as a local rule or play OB/lost balls as lateral hazards to speed up play, but I don't think you can do that based solely on USGA rules.

You absolutely can't do that if you're playing by the book. But if someone comes back to a tee box to retee a lost ball while I'm waiting on a normal weekend round, he better be playing for more than his $2 nassau. Under just about any amateur circumstances, it should be acceptable to drop at the point of OB and play your 4th from there if you didn't hit a provisional.

These are the standard rules of non-professional gentlemens golf

This never makes sense to me. So you're giving someone stroke and distance, plus he's hitting the ball from directly next to OB. If you're going to play this way, let the guy put the ball in the fairway, since the odds of your provisional going to the same exact spot are pretty slim.

Or just make people learn that hitting a provisional is allowed

I look at it as sort of a penalty for not hitting a provisional.

I'd argue that his ball going in the middle of the fairway is slimmer. He may hit his provisional OB too, so I feel like it's lenient to allow a drop lying 3.

Funny you mention this. Another friend of mine who once played with my playing partner now got into an argument on every hole with him. Said he'd slice three out of bounds, then when counting the strokes he'd say he was hitting his second or third shot off the tees. The other friend refuses to play with him now.
