Golfers...How honest are you when scoring?

So I've recently picked up golf and can honestly admit, I'm horrible by any decent golf standards, but only slightly behind where I'd like to be right now.
Anyway, the guy I usually play with and others we've been grouped with, don't count every stroke. For instance, I saw one guy take 4 tee shots, then went and found the best ball and was hitting his "second" stroke.
I understand mulligans and provisionals. I've just seen so many people take way too many mulligans or not truly following the rules of provisional shots. Do people usually play by strict rules or am I enforcing rules on myself that no one else does?
I'm sticking to the rules so I know when I'm truly improving rather than getting better at cheating, and I'm fine playing with people who don't record their legitimate score, but I'm curious to how common a practice this is.

I'll take a mulligan here and there. I'll kick the bad out of a horrible lie as well. I'm not hitting off of a root or gravel

If you want to get better and work on your game, play and count your shots. You will never get better unless you are honest about where you are.
If all you are worried about is looking at getting out of the house, hanging with the fellas and pounding frosty pops like me, it doesn't matter.

It's fine to play with your own rules within your group as long as they are agreed upon and followed. If you are trying to get a legit handicap, or want to compare scores with people you don't usually play with, the official rules should be followed.
The people i usually play with allow two drives off the first tee box depending on if we hit on the range before, one mulligan per 9 holes, and provisionals. However, if we can't find someones ball that obviously did not go into a hazard, we will often just drop without taking a stroke.

Don't really see the poin in fudging your score....

Very Honest!! I have to be, or I'm a bad example!

How do you lie to yourself?

I cheat like a mother fricker. But I'm not really a true golfer either.

I never play by myself. I lie to others. I find it to be a very rewarding experience.

Same here

Cheating on scores that get turned in to establish a handicap only hurts you when you play in a tournament or with other people and bet. Of course if you're like one guy I know (I quit playing with him years ago) who will put down bogey or worse even when he pars so his handicap is high. He can basically steal money when playing in his weekly money game with a group at a different course; thats just wrong on so many levels.

For years I would take a couple of mulligans or take a drop instead odd stroke and distance on an out of bounds shot, but I now play in groups where we bet so I follow the rules all the time.
Also, I am keeping an official handicap, so it does me no good to cheat.

Golf is based on honesty and integrity, if you don't play with those virtues you are dishonoring the game. Stick to the rules, it will be better for you in the long run. That being said, I usually play a crappy course with shitty fairways, so it is an understood rule amongst everyone we play with that you can move your ball an inch or so. When we play nicer courses though we play it down.

Also this for casual rounds.

Well, I think you only dishonor yourself. The game will always keep its integrity. Cheaters never had any to begin with. That's how I don't understand writing down a score you know is false.
It is a good life lesson. Shmucks have a hard time understanding golfers love for the game, because the can't be honest with themselves with just about everything else.

Down...always play down. Anything else gives you a false sense of improvement.

Playing it down really depends on what kind of course you are at
I'll try to play it down at a manicured course, but if i go to Webb or something, I'm bumping

I just picked up clubs for the first time and played this weekend. There's no way I'm going to be honest with my score until I play a lot more.

Also, in casual rounds, I don't think taking a mulligan, improving your lie, etc. are big deals as long as you are honest with yourself and those you are playing with that that is what you are doing. The problem is when you do these things, but lie about them.
