I use diablo golf

It's got all of the course info, but I've been editing quite a few bc they are out of date

Ok so I just downloaded diablo golf and put in my last 10 scores, it puts my handicap at a 9.6, when the other app had me at an 11, why is this one lower?

Course data is the same I checked before I input my scores
I accidentally put one of my scores from April 30 as May 30, all the other dates are correct, could this change it by almost 2?

How many scores did you put in?

It only uses 10 of your last 20

It could also be that the first one is giving you an index, and the second one is giving you an actual handicap (which is flawed unless it's registering a home course for you.

In most cases, a 9.6 index is an 11 handicap

Whats the difference? which one is more official?

Your index is more official. Basically your handicap is related to your home course and your index is a number you can take to any course.
Your index is a number to figure out what your handicap is on a course:
Index x slope/113
Say you were playing a course that had a slope of 130 and your handicap was 10
10*130/113=11.5 your handicap for that course would be 11.5 shots instead of 10. This means you would play to a 83.5 would be playing to your index.
So your handicap is an 11.5
your index is a 10

For a 9.6 index you are some clueless. An index is a number that is input into a formula to determine your course handicap, which depends on the slope rating of the course. So at an easier course you may be a 10 but at a harder course you would play to an 11.

I know I really just recently started getting really serious about golf, up until about 3 months ago I didn't really keep legit scores or anything. I noticed I was getting more and more consistent so now I am trying to figure out the finer points of golf, which includes keeping a more accurate handicap for myself.
I really want to get down into shooting in the 70's consistently instead of once every 10-15 rounds, and I figure learning small stuff like this is going to help

Good thinking. You will also find out that the lower you get, the more you will know, and the more knowledgable you will be compared to your peers.

The skill levels on this place is amazing. I have never broken 80 I have shot 80 4 times(those 4 times I was playing to a solid 9.1 index), and I am a 10.6 index. Do people realize that you are only suppose to tie your handicap probably 20 percent of the time. For someone to go out and shoot 5 shots better than their probable course handicap is pretty amazing, like it should not happen but 1 in 100 times if that much.
My calculation 9.6 handicap on an average course is an 11 handicap. 80% of the time you will shoot an 84 or above. That means 20% of the time you will shoot an 83. and probably 10% of the time you will shot an 82. and the percentage will drop drastically after that.
Sorry not trying to flame, and I am probably a little jealous that someone is out there breaking 80

I am just very streaky (due to poor mechanics bc I've never had a formal lesson) So I would say 80% of the time I am between 81-86, 14% of the time I am 86-90, 5% of the time i am 77-80.
and 1% of the time I am 91+

I am trying to get more consistent

Eta: ok maybe 81-86 75% and 91+ 6%

Lots of good info in here.

I agree with not hitting off of roots and rocks. I'm not wealthy enough to replace clubs or shafts all the time.

I usually try not to pick up on gimmes unless the group behind is waiting or I'm in someone else's way for their putt.

I stop scoring at 10 and yes, 10 is necessary. I always finish a hole and will climb into the woods to hit a ball out. Sure, some of my bad shots are really, really, really bad and flukes, but I don't think I'm learning to focus as much if I can just drop the ball wherever I want and hit it.

It's fine to play with your own rules within your group as long as they are agreed upon and followed. If you are trying to get a legit handicap, or want to compare scores with people you don't usually play with, the official rules should be followed.

The people i usually play with allow two drives off the first tee box depending on if we hit on the range before, one mulligan per 9 holes, and provisionals. However, if we can't find someones ball that obviously did not go into a hazard, we will often just drop without taking a stroke.

spot on with how I do it

Provisionals are part of the game that is like allowing someone to bring 14 clubs.

that is fine, most people think a handicap is an average of your rounds and it couldn't be further from the truth. I imagine your index is actually lower than what you think because of max shot rules.
