Not at all. You have to announce that you are hitting a provisional before hitting the 2nd shot. Usually you have to identify the # on the ball before hitting as well. If you find your first ball, you play that one without penalty. You can't just hit it down the middle and hit a provisional though. It has to be considerable doubt that you're OB.

Man, you're missing half the fun. There is nothing like dealing with nerves from a golf shot when there is money/beer/pride on the line.

That's not correct. You can still hit your first if you find it.

So on the PGA Tour you can hit a provisional, and if you find your first ball you can play it and not take a stroke?

I'm pretty sure the actual rule is, once you hit another ball, you forfeit your other shot, so even if you find it, you are supposed to play the second ball you hit

No. A provisional is a "just in case" ball to keep you from having to go back to the tee. You announce it, hit it and then go look for your first ball. If you find your first ball, you have to play it. If it is ob or lost, then you play your provisional lying 3.

How many of you have played what I call a "provisional mulligan"?

Huh, you learn something new everyday.

Now that I'm thinking about it I'm pretty sure I remember Phil hitting a provisional in the Masters and me thinking it was strange. But I think he ended up playing his provisional.
Or maybe I'm just making shite up

If you don't say provisional before hitting, you're stuck with 3 off the tee though.

Drained a 20 foot birdie putt in our wolf game the other day. The team had pressed (doubling the bet), a birdie is worth double, and one of the guys bet me 5 bucks I wouldn't make it. I don't fist pump often, but draining that putt won us a good amount of money.

If you couldn't play your first ball if you find it, there would be no reason to call it a provisional

That shot Phil hit had gone left into the woods. I remember that shot, and I remember him being mic'ed up saying I'm going to hit a provisional.

I used to do that back when I didn't keep a good score.

I couldn't agree more. The group that I play with are pretty good players (compared to me anyway) and I don't get to play a lot right now. I am hoping to have some time this summer to practice and be a little more competitive in my group.

If you really want to improve your game, play it down and putt it out. If you just want to knock around and have a good time, play by any rules your group agrees to.

You can even hit a provisional for your provisional if it is also potentially OB or lost.

Thanks for the answers on the provisional question. Half the posts in here made me question whether I was cheating when I hit a provisional.
