Inside the leather and it's good, which sucks because I play a 32" putter

If I'm near a root in a regular round, I move my ball now. This is due to the fact I fractured my wrist in a tournament two years ago

The only way to know how much you are improving is to take score for real and count everything.

But if we playing for money, keep real score no doubt.

If its just a friendly round, i'll take a few mulligans, move ball from behind a tree, etc.

I go out there to enjoy myself, part of enjoying myself is having a good time and shooting a good number.
Here are the liberties I will take.
1. I am not breaking a 45 dollar shaft and cutting my hand, so I am moving balls off of roots.
2. If I hit it in the middle of the fairway and some player didn't replace/repair the 2 foot square of turf he hacked up, I am going to hit off of the fairway.
3. I play ready golf, unless I can get a read, So I go out of order.
4. 2 off the first tee.
5. Inside the leather is good as far as putting, unless it is for birdie.
6. I am not taking my shoe off to hit a shot next to water, I am moving the ball where I can actually stand up. Trying not to improve my lie.
7. I will improve greens in my line if players left a dent.
8. I pick up after a triple bogey, and give myself double par. (Doesn't Matter anything over double can't count against my handicap anyway.)
9. If my game is struggling and I think there is a 10% chance my ball is lost, I will hit a provisional for practice.
9.

Someone mentioned that if someone can't find their ball but it obviously did not go in a hazard, they will let that person drop. I allow this in the groups I play with as well. How do you all treat this?

If I am 100% positive it didn't go into a hazard, I will drop it where I thought it should have been and not take a stroke, if there is a decent chance it's in a hazard, I'll drop and take a stroke

quote:

I played behind a group at Santa Maria the other day and a guy came back to retee bc he could not find his ball

I commend that guy, I never do that, I'll just drop where it went out and take a stroke. I want to say it's to not hold up play, but really it's just how I've always done it

eta: If the guy knew he might have to come back and hit again, he should have gone ahead and hit a provisional while taking a stroke, then if he found his ball not count it. Unless he is playing a tournament or something, I don't see how this gives him an advantage

Is this common practice? Often I will just take a stroke and move my ball bc I don't want to play the rest of the round with a wet foot, am I ok to move it and not take a stroke if I am putting it in an equal or lesser lie?

It's not legal by any means, but I wouldn't call it uncommon practice

If you're inside the paint of a hazard, you aren't even supposed to ground your club

Most courses don't have paint around their ponds anyway

What do the rules say about a "provisional"? Are you supposed to go look for your ball and then come back and hit again, or is a provisional the correct way to go?

If a ball may be lost outside a water hazard or may be out of bounds, to save time the player may play another ball provisionally in accordance with Rule 27-1. The player must inform his opponent in match play or his marker or a fellow-competitor in stroke play that he intends to play a provisional ball, and he must play it before he or his partner goes forward to search for the original ball.

I'm pretty sure the actual rule is, once you hit another ball, you forfeit your other shot, so even if you find it, you are supposed to play the second ball you hit

I do most of these as well unless I am playing in a tournament. Most of the tournaments that I play in allow you to bump your ball the width of a scorecard as long as it is in the fairway. I never play for money because I suck at golf to much to do this.

You are supposed to hit a provisional when you think your ball is o.b. (white stakes)

Hit the provisional, then look for your first shot. If you can't find it, take a stroke and hit the provisional.

That's not correct. You can still hit your first if you find it.

Based on your posts in this thread I would recommend picking up a rule book
