ESPN is set to remove its BottomLine ticker during college football games this season in a move to free up more on-screen real estate, per a report by Ryan Glasspiegel in Front Office Sports.

The move will bring all of ESPN’s college football broadcasts in line with its major events, like the College Football Playoff or NBA postseason games, which already do not feature the on-screen ticker. This season, all college football games on ABC, ESPN, ESPN2, SEC Network, ACC Network, ESPNU, and ESPNEWS will go without the BottomLine.

“We’re always looking for ways to better serve sports fans. By removing the BottomLine during live action, we’re creating a cleaner presentation that keeps the focus where it belongs—on the field,” an ESPN spokesperson told Front Office Sports.

ESPN will still give score alerts throughout game broadcasts at “specific times during each quarter,” the report reads. Programming updates, like if kickoff of a game will be moved to a different network because another game is running long, will be given in a graphic at the top-right corner of the screen.

I like this because I have YouTube TV so I record EVERY game and sometimes I wanna go back and watch a game and not know the score which might flash on the bottom of the game I currently would be watching.

This translates to “we don’t want to give you a reason to flip over to NBC, CBS, or FOX”

This combined with more ad space are the real reason.

In my day you had to wait for them to run the 10 Minute Ticker. And wait for the commercial break to find out the score. Now get off my lawn.

In the same vein why do we need announcers? What do they add to a broadcast that ambient crowd noise couldn't equal? We can google that Herman Johnson was the largest baby born in Louisiana

A bit of a stretch there mate. I agree they will likely just use the space for Wegovy and gambling ads, just saying I don’t need to see the scores of other games scrolling on the bottom of my screen anymore and haven’t for quite some time

I know it's a stretch because normies have become so used to the broadcast booth that getting rid of them is a bridge too far but they are extraneous. Whose viewing experience is enhanced when Greg McElroy and Sean McDonough discuss a team that's not on the field's playoff chances?

This is valid, but your suggestion is a little too much of throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

Can you have Fox install one of the Chinese humanoids for Gus Johnson?

It repeats "Mama there goes that man" and "boom" every 20 or 30 seconds

Now if I need to go out for stuff w/my kid on Saturdays I can record games and have a far better chance of not having the results ruined when I go back to watch them later.
