Did not realize Bryce Harper played JUCO ball at 16 years old.

Dropped out of highschool and got his GED because they wouldn't pitch to him in highschool. Was there a big out cry by the national media or baseball talking heads about this? Obviously he was a different talent and it worked out for him. Has any other player done this?

He was considered the LeBron on baseball. On the cover of SI being proclaimed the “Chosen One.” I don’t remember a big negative outcry about him playing JUCO.

It was definitely a story but was neutral in tone iirc

He was like the Wayne Rooney of baseball.

Kid made the show at 19 and threw up a 5.2 WAR. Thats actually insane.

He was like the Johnny Tsunami of baseball

Our media gets carried away about making so many people in the next superstar. In his case, they were actually right.

He might not be the GOAT like he was being projected at the time but the dude has done a great job mostly living up to the hype

This. In a few decades we'll look back and miss those first few years with both him and Trout.

Remember he hit a HR into some desert and ESPN was out there in some cactuses trying to find out exactly how far he hit it?
That’s probably not how it happened but that’s what I remember
Also you’re exactly right about how it was covered.

I believe it was a juco that played in a wooden bat league

Yeah. Faster path to MLB that way for him..

he did that so he could go to JUCO earlier to get drafted quicker

Sounds a little like Dennis Rodman's path to the NBA.

I think I remember some stories about his dad being the next Earl Woods/Richard Williams but nothing too histrionic.

He was on the cover of SI around that time. That was before alot of social media so that’s really the first I had heard of him.

It was fastest way to get drafted. He was selected in what would have been his Junior year in HS.
Also, the JC conference he played in only allowed wooden bats.
He was obviously focused on getting to the big leagues ASAP

I was 10 years old when his SI cover came out. He was who a lot of kids my age grew up wanting to be tbh.
He’s a fun player to watch, and gained a lot of respect for him when he wanted to move to 1B while getting TJ so he could continue to play. He was a hothead in his younger days, but he’s a good influence modern day.

Yep. Then the reporters asked him if he was going to drink during the away trip to Canada. Which was an obnoxious question to a Mormon (trying to get him to contradict his religion). And he responded with an all time great sports quote of “that’s a clown question bro”.
