This would be the end of college sports:

quote:

The Knight Commission on Wednesday released a proposal to require the NCAA, the College Football Playoff and Division I conferences to restructure how they distribute more than $3 billion in annual revenue, a model designed to guide the NCAA as it considers sweeping changes to its current governance structure.

The commission's report, titled "Connecting Athletics Revenues with the Educational Model of College Sports (C.A.R.E.)," aims to curb what it describes as "a runaway financial race that threatens to upend and undermine the educational model of college athletics."

quote:

The commission concluded that systemic change -- not incremental reform -- is necessary. It proposed five core principles of the model -- transparency, independent oversight, gender equity, broad-based sports opportunities and financial responsibility -- to be adopted "in law, regulation, and/or conference rules to guide the financial system."

quote:

Another example suggested was a "luxury tax" system on excessive coaching salaries, allowing for financial penalties for total coaching salaries that exceed a certain limit. The report suggested that the U.S. Congress or the conferences should adopt caps or minimum financial thresholds to limit sport-specific spending

quote:

The report specifically referenced the NCAA's "discriminatory gender-based awards" in men's and women's basketball, pointing to the Basketball Performance Fund that currently awards more than $160 million annually for winning tournaments in men's basketball. The C.A.R.E. model would require athletics revenue distribution to be equitable with regard to gender.

This is where schools give the middle finger to the NCAA and leave.

This people won't stop until everything is ruined.

Women attend college far more than men, yet they are able to capitalize on the athletics for the university. For the social activists the crusade never ends.

This is absolutely something worth pursuing. Only thing I take issue with after a brief read is gender equity stuff.

Women's basketball does not deserve the same payout as men's basketball because they do not generate the same revenue. Just adjust payouts by weighing against revenue brought in, and maybe sprinkle a little bit more towards women's sports to promote growth in the respective sports. Wouldn't be surprised if that's currently the procedure.

The pendulum has swung too far towards semi-professionalism rather than collegiate student athletes. It's past due for some kind of course correction.

This “Commission” has no authority whatsoever. They are a special interest group of activists and academics with a good P.R. department.

Collegiate sports as we know it is pretty much over already.

There is no governing body to make this happen. There is zero chance the large conferences would go along with it.

There is a better chance big time collegiate sports truly become professional.

Been the gameplan all along. Not sure most people understand there is a huge divide at colleges & universities when it comes to male dominated sports. Has to do with it being exclusive to men, the earnings on mens sports from TV rights, the high salaries of coaches. Typically coordinators makes more than anyone on faculty and the HC salaries are astronomical compared to the highest paid professors. All of this combined is why they hate football in general.

Currently the TV dollars and contracts insulate it from the attacks. They just need to keep chipping away until they find way to tap into the revenue stream and will take most of it.

Mens sports and win/lose competition is no mainstream at mahy Universities nowadays. They just don't talk openly about it.

Sounds like they’re proposing a salary cap for coaches and facilities upgrades. Seems a little silly when players are able to get paid whatever they want and transfer at will thanks to image and likeness.

This happens and certain conferences give everyone the finger and bolt.

Teams in the Mountain West don’t deserve to get profit sharing with the SEC.

Also, the “arbitrary awards” are based on viewership and ticket sales IIRC. Men’s BB makes tons of bank on the tournament for ticket sales and TV revenue. Women? Less so. And pay for teams is distributed accordingly.
