re: Colorado and Deion: You know it's bad when you've lost Joel Klatt

Luginbill made a claim about Colorado having the worst roster in the country before the season.
Then he got some negative feedback, so he modified his statements to be about depth behind their best players, going through hypotheticals about if X, Y, or Z go down.
What I'm saying is that exact scenario happened. And it was proven that Colorado does have quality depth (and that Luginbill is an absurd clown).
Miller and McClain emerged when Hunter was out. But then they were essentially back to being non-factors when Hunter came back.
Not good personnel decisions in my opinion. They could've played more in that game, bringing Hunter's snap count down in his first game back, making him fresher late, which could've been beneficial on defense because no one could cover #13. And in that scenario, if a fresher Hunter can't do it in that game for whatever reason, give McClain a shot.

I was referring to the Colorado hype in September. This program was first adopted by non-sports media as something for the Black community to celebrate. That is what it is and is not grist for this forum, although I think that probably bothered some folks here. Then after they beat a TCU team that was 180 degrees removed from last year, and for some reason got ranked, everyone lost their collective minds about this “phenomenon” when anyone coming at this from a sports standpoint understood that just getting close to .500 would be a monumental accomplishment for him and this program. I will say that I thought they looked well prepared and coached the first couple of times out. They haven’t looked that way recently. Because this is when it gets tough and you need a coach. We will see if he is one.

absolutely mind-boggling. even if you wanna pass the ball, fine, at the very least, don't snap the ball with so much time left on the playclock. makes no sense. all that extra time that teams leave on the field allows the opponent several extra plays to make a comeback
It’s because they run no huddle and you risk losing 5 yards for false start just having your oline sit their. Also, it gives time for defensive players to read the play better and recall what they saw in film. If they would bring back a huddle, you could milk the shite out of the clock

He appears to be a great leader, motivator, and good person to be the front of the program. How will he do when Shedur and Hunter are gone. can he still continue to build without 5 star players as corner stones?

He got Hunter to fricking Jackson St. You think he can't get more stars out of high school or the portal?

Deion is not the only coach (analytics) who takes this approach. Deion's stated rationale is putting pressure on the other team and trusting Shedeur. I think that's more than a sufficient rationale.
If you look at where they got in trouble in overtime, it was again the OL not being able to get push to run it in. That left them with one final play that broke down, and Shedeur just threw it up. Everyone knows it wasn't a good pass, but it was really just a desperate attempt because the OL can't perform.

You think Deion is using analytics?
He doesn’t even know to go on defense in overtime. You think he’s using high level tools?

Had no idea Klatt played college football.

Yeah, there is zero reason to ever take the ball 1st in OT. And I think they did against Stanford almost solely to justify doing it against Colorado State. “That’s who we are, we’re aggressive” or whatever. He couldn’t admit that doing it against CSU was a mistake that they luckily got away with.
And that’s one of the things that could prevent Deion from being successful. Does he have the humility to learn from his mistakes. A lot of coaches who’ve been doing it a long time still frick up game management, whether it’s not properly using the clock, running the ball and turning it over when taking a knee would have ended the game, or not knowing when to call (or not call) a time out. And it’s on all level. Hell, Sean Payton has been an NFL HC for 16 or 17 years and he fricked up last week and took an unnecessary time out before half and left the other team with enough time to go down and kick a FG. Say what you will about Sean Payton, but I bet he doesn’t do that again this year, if ever.
Deion doubled down on taking the ball 1st in OT rather admit it was a mistake. Assuming he is in this for the long haul (and I have my doubts), but a lot of his success will depend on whether or not he’s humble enough to know that he is young in his HC career and still has a lot to learn. His greatest attribute could also be his biggest weakness. There is a balance there, though, if he’s willing to admit his flaws (to himself, not necessarily publicly) and adjust, that he could find that could lead to long-term success. If he’s willing to find it.

Will he get enough to make them much better than they are now? As has been pointed out, his recruiting class is near the bottom of the Big XII with only 9 commits right now.
That can obviously change, but they have a lot of work to do given the holes in their roster. Assuming they will be able to rely heavily on the portal isn't a sure thing.

They should focus on building through the portal more now especially on the lines.

It’s ridiculous everyone calls him Coach Prime because he demanded it

Read the link. You don't realize how...ironic your post is. (The analytics show that teams who are on defense first lose more often.)
Yes, I think Colorado uses analytics. And no, analytics are not the be-all and end-all, Mr. Cyborg. But you have proved you don't even know about the analytics to begin with...

Coach prime was blaming it on the players, saying he didn't have the dogs he needs.

I still have a mild chuckle when I see grown men that have paid jobs in the media refer to him in that way. He's not a transformer. His name is Deion Sanders. Coach Sanders.
Step 1 to having the first shred of credibility in the profession would probably be to stop calling yourself a nickname like you're a little kid playing make believe.
Do you feel this same way about Jimbo Fisher, Dabo Swinney, or Bear Bryant?

quote:completely agree but that was his rationale for taking the ball first in OT against CSU, so he did repeated it vs. Stanford.
There is no rationale to EVER take the ball first in overtime. It has nothing to do with aggressiveness. It's about knowing what you have to do. Going first puts your team at a competitive disadvantage, period.
Completely dumb move

Guys, stop punching the other team after the whistle. That doesn't take any talent whatsoever. It doesn't take any effort. All it takes is being halfway smart. The undisciplined play was not just a problem in that game, it's been a problem in every game.
Joel Klatt, come on down! You’re the next contestant on “Am I cancelled?”

Your hatred of Deion’s theatrics (which is valid) has warped you into thinking he’s some sort of imbecile.
He’s clearly a really bright guy, even if he may not be a football coaching savant. Which I’m not sure he’s ever claimed to be. But he’s obviously competent. And it’s not like he hired a bunch of “yes men” hangers-on for a staff, like he just gave his Tallahassee posse circa 1990 a bunch of jobs they weren’t remotely qualified for.
That was actually the thing that’s impressed me most about him this year—the staff he managed to hire without being in the fraternity for very long. They have done a very nice job with what they’ve been given to work with and in the short amount of time they’ve been given to do it. And Deion seems to mostly stay out of the way and let them do their jobs. Which you would likely praise other coaches for. There is just zero chance that a competent P5 coaching staff are not using analytics on some level in 2023.

A legit gripe about Deion the coach in that game is the decision to go on offense first in OT. This is one of the rare incidents, maybe the only incident in football where the old school “gut feel”’guys AND the analytics guys agree
if you have the option you go 2nd. It’s a clear advantage for your team. It’s like batting 2nd, actually bigger
