USC vs LSU 1979

I stood there on the bleachers for about 20 minutes after the horn trying to fathom what had happened

Would think 1969 Arkansas loss to Texas gotta be up there.

Basically was the National Championship and still holds the record for the highest television ratings in the history of CFB.

They blew a 14 pt 4th quarter lead at home with Dick Nixon in the stands.

Honestly, there is no other answer than this.

Texas converts a ridiculous long 4th down pass late in the 4th as a wishbone team, or Arkansas wins a second championship in the 60s. Broyles does that, and he very well may become one of the all time greats. No telling how he builds off that.

But, that loss, changed everything.

One play was the difference. Nothing more heartbreaking than that.

Most of those are great, but I don't know how they left out 5th Down and the Flea Kicker. Mizzou had those games won, and they were taken away in two very different, but excruciating ways. Plus Colorado and Nebraska ended up winning national championships after those respective games.

I'm guessing the only reason that one isn't higher is because Miami would have trucked them anyways.

That and Tennessee beating Florida the week before was a bigger upset. Florida would have killed LSU like they already did before and met Miami in 01 had that not happened.

Absolutely. The president awarded Texas the NC trophy in the locker room after the game… in Fayetteville.

A 4th quarter muffed punt against UGA cost Texas the ‘84 cotton bowl and very likely the NC. Those kind of heartbreaks were Texas’ signature under Fred Akers including a blowout loss while ranked #1 at Arkansas in ‘81 that’s still unfathomable. And a blowout loss against ND in the ‘78 cotton bowl that cost them and Earl Campbell an NC.

And of course the 1991 cotton bowl where they had a decent chance at an NC, only to be physically mauled so bad it became part of one of the better 30 for 30s (The U). Of course Akers had been long gone by then but the tradition continued.

To be a Texas fan….

Boise, Kansas State, Oklahoma State, and West Virginia are definitely in the top 10 but including Auburn-Oregon and Missouri-Kansas on there is pretty weak. Not close to top 10 in the history of college football.

1/9/12 does not qualify. Anyone with a brain knew we weren’t going to win that game.

Michigan losing to APL st. That was not only devestating for Michigan it sent shock waves through college football and he’ll create the most crazy college football season ever.

What an awful day that was. That was the first ever game on the BTN. Dish Network was not carrying the channel at that point, so I had to listen on the radio.

All of these years later, would that have been better or worse to watch on the TV compared to radio? Idk.

"I'd like to know how could the president know so little about Watergate in 1973 and so much about college football in 1969?"

Penn State was undefeated for two years in a row and finished #2 in 1969, even #3 behind 9-0-1 USC the year before.

Texas beat #9 Notre Dame in the Cotton Bowl 21-17.

Penn State beat #4 Missouri 10-3 in the Orange Bowl.

But the President had already spoken.

Yeah, I would say UCLA in 1999. Bruins had a lot going for them that year and Miami was still in the process of rebuilding.UCLA got into a scoring battle with the Canes which was a mistake.

I feel like a few things need to be true in order to make a list like this. One, the team has to be historically relevant but not elite, and two, there has to be some element of surprise.

That disqualifies KU because that was still a dream season for them. I believe they were the only team to go 12-1. Won a BCS bowl too. I'm sure KU fans still remember that season fondly.

It disqualifies Oregon too because they had their shot. It wasn't some fluke that they lost to elite Auburn and OSU squads. They gave both teams their best shot and just came up short. No pride lost there.

WVU losing against Pitt is #1 no questions asked. They're historically relevant--certainly in the conversation as the best program to have never won a national title. And the loss to Pitt was staggering. They were right in the middle of that absurd run with RichRod/White/Slaton, and Pitt was fricking garbage that year. All the stars were aligned for them, and they laid an absolute egg at home to lose themselves a shot at the title. They've never really recovered from that.

It should've never gone to OT in the first place.

#1 LSU loses to an unranked Arkansas and drops 4 spots.

#2 West Virginia loses to unranked Pittsburgh and drops 9 spots.

Sounds about right.
