Baseball should be embracing exciting players like that... not try to turn them into a villain.

Same with Big Papi.

So, it's OK for you to post racist shite, but we can't? If I posted how did the NBA get so black, you'd jump up my arse.

Oh, Jesus. Spoken like and attention deficit disordered child. I'm a moderate fan of baseball but that comment is stupid and vacuous.

Chris Rock's argument is that black people don't like baseball because it's too stuck in the past... but he also mentioned that him and most other black people when he grew up DID follow baseball.

So what happened between the time Chris was young and now? Baseball being too "old-fashioned" doesn't explain it, because Chris and the people he grew up with liked it.

Baseball has fallen behind the NFL & NBA because over the past 20-30 years, they have failed in promoting the game properly especially when it comes to it's star players. In terms of promotion, MLB is very "old fashioned. The NBA & NFL has gone above & beyond in making their teams & players household names. MLB has not. If were to ask the average black person who is Adam Jones, they would probably think Pacman Jones first. Many probably have never heard of the Orioles Adam Jones.

It's starts with the youth though. Once MLB lost the attention of the youth of the country, it created a large age group who could care less about baseball. That goes for black or white. Gaining the youth of America's attention is the only way baseball will increase its popularity. It starts & ends with promoting the games best players to where they become household names though.

ETA. Saw your later post which is basically what I just said. Seems we are on the same page.

I'm pretty sure it's been said before, but what sport do black kids grow up playing? Football and basketball. Most simply do not like baseball. I played youth baseball in a city that was 60% black, and a vast majority of the black kids only played baseball to kill time until football season.

maybe they don't like it bc in football or basketball, you can just be the most athletic and succeed, you don't have to be skilled like you have to be in baseball...

you can be born athletic, but developing skills takes time

You sound old and grumpy.

So are you telling me homeruns aren't exciting?

Almost every superstar baseball player since the beginning of baseball have been big homerun hitters.

Last year the home run leader hit 40 homeruns. Nobody else hit more than 37. Only 11 players hit at least 30 homeruns last year.

That is terrible and it makes the game more boring.

Even chicks dig the long ball.

Not old, not grumpy. I just think it was ridiculous when every half arse was a 30 hr per year hitter. A well timed single or double is just as exciting, especially if there is a play at the plate. With a HR the drama is over within 5 seconds.

Yeah, the same ones who yell "Touchdown!!!" when a ball flies over the fence.

No I would say that is fairly average if you compare generations..... we will never see baseball played like it was in late 90's through 2005/2006 again. I'm ok with that it is a sport I enjoy and find interesting. Not everyone has to like, I find basketball boring, but I don't hop in every basketball thread to say that.
baseball as a youth sport is expensive and it is becoming more about who your parents are. Also the best teams are travel teams and those teams are expensive. A lot of inner city youth can't afford baseball.
promoting of the athletes is and can be an issue but baseball has been better about promoting the players.
