some spray charts if you are interested

not sure I understand not having one guy in shallow left, seems like he would catch more pop flies than the 6th guy on the right would catch line drives, which is the point of the shift I think

Maybe his pop ups are so high that they can be run under from where they are.

MLB is all about the homer. Joey doesn’t even see the infielders. He only sees the wall.

The hitter should have never made it to the majors with such a glaring inability like that. I mean, the defense is saying you're incompetent at that point. You don't even have to hit it well - you can even get a broken bat swing at it. Anything to the left of the mound is a hit. Hitter, his batting coach, and manager should all be embarrassed by this. It's pathetic.

Some of you people are really fricking stupid.

What happened to all of the hitters from the 1970’s? Seems half the lineups had the guy who choked WAY up on the bat and swung with it? Of course he could bunt too.

Would insult me as a pro to have people do this. I’d be working on my drag bunts. If for no other reason than for them to play me squared up.

He bunted for a hit last week I think it was, so he's proven he can do it.

Plus he's not up there to get on base, he's up there to try and hit bombs so in some ways bunting for a single is playing right into what they want. Especially when you factor in there isn't a lot of fire power on the Rangers

He’s not paid to bunt. All of the new sabremetrics tell guys to continue to play to their strengths. That over the course of a season you are more likely to be successful doing what you are best at. Also, there are no defenders on the other side of the fence so hit it to that spot

A couple things. For those saying just hit it the other way the pitcher isn't going to give him a pitch to hit the other way so cancel that. In the second inning with no outs I do believe he should bunt. The Astros employed a shift on Didi and he bunted it down the line the next at bat Bregman moved back to third. By bunting they will shift less. Late in games I want Gallo swinging the bat tho

This is as off base as the idiots saying "just hit it the other way".

Wouldn’t Gallo know the pitches they’d use to keep him from hitting opposite field and use that knowledge to try to crush them over the fence?

No. Because pitchers don't alter their pitch selection because of a defensive shift.

I agree with that to an extent, but a bunt past the pitcher anywhere to the left could be a double. If he's paid to get extra base hits, well then, there you go.

The Astros likely didn’t have as dramatic of a shift on for the next Didi at bat if someone was on base

It isn’t really them saying “I don’t think you can bunt”

They are just perfectly fine with someone that’s a big threat to get a bunt single
