Deadspin idiot thinks it is time for Augusta National to do away with the name.

The heralded golf tournament, one of the four majors, needs to go back to its original name — the Augusta National Invitational. It became the Masters in 1939.

Tiger Woods, other big-time golfers and corporate sponsorships should demand it. In the current climate, with all the sweeping changes, it’s only right and just. Best of all, in this case, it’s a simple and smooth fix. The Masters never felt good or even sounded good when you said it. And before we hear from the choir about tradition and history, save it. When that history and tradition is rooted in slavery, it shouldn’t be preserved and honored.

Wait... they think it's called The Masters because of slave masters?
Deadspin gonna Deadspin
Deadspin gonna Deadspin

I don't think people at Augusta National are too worried about what Soy boys and black people think. Not really their constituency.

Deadspin was always different at their peak but this new staff they have tries way too damn hard.

Does the name have any relation to slave masters? Or do they just not like the word also coincidentally refers to slave owners?

Didn't realize slavery was happening in 1939.

And be honest. When you hear anyone say the Masters, you think of slave masters in the South. There’s nothing else, nothing special. You don’t think of someone mastering the game of golf. When has anyone mastered golf?

You might be a racist if this is the first thing you think of when you hear "The Masters."

I'm honestly surprised deadspin still exists

Uh, no. No you don't.
And I'm being honest.

Tiger doesn’t strike me as the cancel culture type

If so, then Tiger Woods owns every golfer on the PGA tour for the last 23 years.

What's funny is that everyone who writes for Deadspin today wasn't there in November. That means current management got their wish of getting rid of everyone who didn't fall in line with the "Stick to Sports" mandate but went out and hired a whole new crop of writer doing the exact same thing.
Here's a hint- it was never about sticking to sports.
