Hilly terrain and poor visibility, right?

How does a helicopter hit the ground by accident? It's flying in the air...

Outside of flying by instruments or not flying at all I have wondered what should have been cruising speed when it started to follow the 101 with the fog still causing visibility issues, clouds overhead, staying low to point that control (SoCal?) couldn't always follow due to higher terrain around it, and following a road that was curving through this higher terrain.
It seemed fast in general much less the other conditions going on. I am not a pilot, but maximum speed and fog on what basically became like a curvy road for it with the terrain doesn't make sense to me.
Has anyone reported on when game started? I still would think Kobe could just get them to delay start, but up to time of crash the flight had to have taken longer than planned with delay around zoo and also possibly the flying up and around Burbank & Van Nuys airports (not sure of original plan or times).

I'm aware this is probably a retarded question, but since I don't know anything about flying, I don't understand.
Some articles and YouTube and you'll know.
Search aviation acronyms and buy some aviators and boom, you got it!

I thought People said it fell out of the sky.
If you’re falling you’re gonna kit the ground whatever the elevation.

2) the helicopter suffered a mechanical issue that cause it to crash.

The helicopter he was in had an accident and he’s in heaven now.

He was turning because he was in the soup and had powered into the turn to avoid losing lift
He lost lift anyway and basically turned into the side of the hill

Fog limited visibility and apparently was bad enough to ground other small craft flights
It looks like it was ok from where they left but they ended up hitting that bad patch in that hilly area.
Pilot probably had no idea and couldn't see anything.
When you lose your orientation as a pilot, it's like flying blind.
A lot of times in those conditions, he was flying next to that major highway to help him know where he is at all times.

This is the head scratcher on a lot of aviation forums. They were traveling along Hwy 101 at around 500 ft and could see the road. The clouds were 1300ft. they ascend into the clouds, basically do a u-turn, and then crash at 1100 ft going 170mph.
It seems if they kept following Hwy 101 at 500 ft, then they could’ve made it to the academy. Possibly pilot was wanting to get higher to be tracked and let ATC direct them. Who knows. The academy was west of Thousand Oaks right off 101.

A-.
Missed one piece.
people who live there say they could hear a funny sound coming from the helicopter. Maybe something was broken. Maybe the engine. Maybe the part that spins the big blade on the roof.
We dont know. People are looking at all the parts to learn more.

the last radio contact told the pilot he was too low for them to help him, so that's probably why he got higher
he probably ascended and it was probably worse doing that and that's when he started flying blind
had he stayed low he probably could have been guided by the road to his destination

Helicopter without Terrain Avoidance System takes off in heavy fog.
Visually impaired pilot flies into terrain.
For those in the know...is an S-76 single pilot rated? I always thought that it was a 2 pilot operation.

I could have kept it to myself, but I like to learn when I'm ignorant about something and was curious about exactly what happened.
But having said that, let's take a look at the brilliant posts you've made today in response to various people:
