My question is basically why was he flying so low?

I understand he hit a mountain and mountains are not flat, obviously.

I’m sure the pilot knew there are mountains around, and they’re not exactly Mount Everest. Surely he knows the elevation in the area. Surely he has gauges telling him the elevation he’s at.

He didn’t even hit near the top. He hit low on the mountain.

My question is, how does that happen? Why fly so low? Particularly if you are in thick fog and can’t see where you’re going, then why fly so low?

Yeah, but we're not talking mount Everest here. It wasn't more than a hill.

How low was he flying and why?

the fog was likely disorientating and the pilot didn't realize how close they were to hitting the ground

Look how low down the hill it hit.

That is absurdly low.

One thing ive been wondering about it was why was the copter traveling so fast. From what ive the copter crashed at 200 mph in the mountain.

If fog is so heavy and visibility is so low, why not slow tf down until you can see like you do as if you are driving in a car.

Is it possible for a helicopter to go slow? Do they have different gears? I know extremely little about flying so that is a honest question

I thought that was what happened too. But I heard the helicopter went straight down and to the left before impact

They can hover in place. Of course they can go slow, as long as the blades are still spinning fast enough to give them enough lift to maintain altitude.

They flew low with poor visibility. The change in ground elevation snuck up on the pilot and they hit the hill with a high rate of speed. My pilot friend seems to think this was very avoidable, but also a few other helis were grounded that day

Perspective. It was 1,085 ft.

For some reason, the helicopter was also descending fairly rapidly it seems.

Helicopter doesn't see the ground elevation increase because of fog.

Helicopter fly into ground and go BOOM.

Okay, explain it to me like I'm 3.

Yep, very crazy. Definitely mountains, not hills but this is approximately where they crashed when you look behind "Las Virgenes Municipal Water District" on Google Maps.

Crash appears to be just lower than the trail, path, dirt road or whatever it is.

When you're flying in fog apparently it's very easy to lose perception on where you are relative to the surrounding environment. It's called spatial disorientation and kills pilots every year.
