I like Cam but he should have stopped right here. The next part of the statement comes off (or atleast reads like) real cockyness or entitlement that will fuel the haters he has.

lets be honest, is he wrong?

While what he said is partly true, Newton getting kicked out of Florida for stealing computers & academic cheating. Then the issue with his father trying to sell him to Miss State might have also had something to do with it.

It's a progression Newton still finds humbling. The same week he broke Steve Grogan's single-season record for rushing TDs by a quarterback, Newton was seen rushing from the players' parking lot to the locker room with lunch from a chicken joint for all the veterans.

He should blame the fact that he only played 1 year of big time college ball and his several character issues.

He had a chance to play the race card and did not. He has surpassed expectations. He has the chance to change the position. NEXT.

That and the fact he couldn't remember a single play he ran at Auburn when asked to do so by Gruden. That segment really hurt his image before the draft. He has far surpassed expectations though. He has a bright future.

I agree with Cam that the under-achieving efforts of Russell and Young contributed to the perception that Cam Newton would be a flop. Although Newton is clearly alluding to skin color because as a black man, he's probably hypersensitive to such an idiotic identifier. But he's right in the the sense that Russell and Young were QBs with great tools that came across as stupid. Although Cam may have outscored them with a rather modest Wonderlic, some of his interviews and judgment off the field helped paint him as a potential dullard.

Robert Griffin will certainly NOT have that issue. He will also have no need to thank Cam for being a trailblazer.

Agreed with everything he said except saying the days of the drop back passer are gone.

A QB who can read the blitz and know where to go with the ball is infinitely more valuable than mobility, not that mobility isn't nice to have.

And the fact that he was, to some extent, a running quarterback in college and that doesn't translate to the NFL.

Very risky #1 pick. Ron Rivera has balls to the floor.

Dude was drafted first. Why create a chip on your shoulder mentality? Do black athletes not realize the white athletes are just as scrutinize pre-draft also?

He seems to think that white QBs are never bust. Peyton was a success, Leaf was a bust. What the hell is he talking about blazing a trail?

I like watching Cam play and think he's a good kid, but he seems to be just as immature and arrogant as Lebron. That is what is holding him back from being a universal icon.

Not to me, he simply seems to be giving an analogy to the JM reference in reverse

The interesting thing is that the people who compared him to Russell and Young were doing so based almost COMPLETELY on race...

Who the hell was saying that Cam was the next JaMarcus Russel? They are completely different players. Plus, Russell wasn't a thief or a liar. Although Raiders fans may disagree .

There is a much different degree of scrutiny. And there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with playing with a chip on your shoulder. Drew Brees plays with a chip on his shoulder, for example.

No, YOU seem to think that he thinks that. In reality, black QBs ARE held to a different standard. The fact that this conversation is taking place is evidence of that.

Hell, the fact that people compared him to Russell is evidence of that. The ONLY way in which Russell and Newton is similar is race. The best comparison for Newton, by the way, was a faster Big Ben, yet few people (especially on this site) seemed to acknowledge that.

Regarding being a trailblazer, Newton's talking about potentially being the guy who ENDS the overscrutiny of black QBs, both perceived and actual.

Again, you're injecting your own biases, for whatever reason. Everything that I've seen and heard about Newton (and I know people who have met him in scenarios where character is evident...) says the complete opposite.

What's holding him back from being a "universal icon" is Carolina's defense.
