If this was all true then why not just have him inactive? Something still not jiving on this deal.

Yeah, if they're intent on him not playing on D why keep him active just for special teams? You could actually find an in-house replacement for that role.

Yeah, I was about to say Robinson got in trouble for something right before Super Bowl. But still played.

I think $7-9 mil a year is probably what he’ll get with his track record, I think Talib’s last deal was $12 mil/year or something like that (first good/non-top 3 guy I could think of).

Unless you feel like you are one piece away, these older guys are a big risk. Wasn’t Joe Haden’s FA market not that high when he was cut? Could be wrong....I just remember the DFW media said Dallas had no interest in signing him because of what he’d likely demand. Granted, he already has his guaranteed cash from Cleveland for the year.

Ian Rapoport ? @RapSheet
My understanding is the benching of #Patriots CB Malcolm Butler happened because of a perfect storm of issues: Sickness, a rough week of practice, and a minor rule violation believed to be related to curfew. A complicated matter.

Rap's always wrong but this is much more believable than him breaking multiple teams rules almost every day of the week but still playing.

Unless he did something really serious off the field, I don’t see how you continue to bench him when the secondary repeatedly keeps getting ripped by a backup QB. I could see benching him for a quarter or a few series. But not every defensive snap.

I hear on Boston Radio this morning from a guy with Patriots contacts that the Butler incident was totally based on play and play alone.

Guy said Belichick came in right before the game and told Rowe he was starting and Butler he was benched.

Apparently the move splintered the locker room right before the game and pissed of BOTH numerous coaches AND players. Some hated the move, some were fine with it.

No one knew Belichick was going to do it, that's why Butler was fully dressed and crying so hard during the anthem....he probably literally just found out within the hour.

The Butler stuff during the week, yes, was possibly part of the decision, but this host said his source (who has been right on basically everything) said it was based on play during the year and during the playoffs.

If that's true, then that's one of the biggest blunders in SB history. Forget that you don't have one of your best defensive players on the field who always makes tackles, just think of the shock d coordinator and staff had when they heard the news. The game plan was based around Butler all week and now Eric frickING Rowe is your starting 2nd corner.

Source: Benching Butler not a discipline issue. Belichick made the call a few hours before game. Many coaches and players were shocked. Some players and coaches “furious” with Belichick, this is a move that divided the locker room

The fact Rowe, the other CB, said he wasnt notified until during warmups, lets you know this wasnt some discipline issue

I don't really understand how that can be a last second change.

Not starting, I get it...sure, Butler has not been lights out.
But why not put him in at some point during the game when the shite they were doing wasn't working. Could have had Butler playing with an edge in the second half.

I got multiple down votes earlier in this thread for saying the same thing. I was told by someone who would know that Butler did not know he wasn’t playing as of the morning of game day.

Crazy crazy decision. Maybe to start the game but how in the hell do you not make the change at half if it is based on play.

It’s basically impossible to believe this was just about play. You go from starting every game to not even seeing the field during an embarrassing defensive performance?

So did he do something against team rules in warmups?

Why would you wait until warmups to notify Rowe and Butler

I don’t disagree with this at all. Plus, if it is about play how do you not change the plan when it is obviously going wrong the first half.
