This makes my heart ache. As a girl dad to a soon-to-be 8 yr.old(June 18th) I can't imagine the pain that the Barrett family is going through. Prayers for the family.

Hug your kids, hard. You never know.

I'm glad that we got rid of the pool when we moved into our current house.

Two year olds are a dangerous age. Old enough to scoot around and get into trouble when your back is turned but too young to know better or protect themselves. Avoid pools, busy roads and toxic substances or you might be living everyone's worst nightmare.

I have a 2 year old son and a six month old daughter.

Even just reading this gives me a knot in my stomach I cannot get rid of. I can’t stop thinking about this, particularly when we have a pond on our property.

Prayers to the family, this has me shook

Saw this right before I went to read to my almost two year old and put him to bed. Held him for a few extra minutes tonight.

Thoughts and prayers going out to the Barrett’s tonight.

So awful. Lots of people don’t know that swimming lessons can begin very very early and are often even free. They teach kids to float, swim to wall, wall walk, and even exit the pool.

If your kids haven’t learned to swim, look into it.

This is terrible. Sending prayers up for this entire family. One thing I never want to experience is having to bury my child. If I had to do that, I don't know how in the world I would be able to go on living.

I have a soon to be 2 year old. Safety fence with self latching gate is perhaps one of the best things I’ve ever spent money on. You hear stories like this and so many scenarios play out in your head. Curios as to how this happened but regardless, it’s absolutely terrible. A friend of my wife had their kid drown after they crawled through the dog door and wound up in the pool. Terrifying.

My 2 year old nephew figured out how to unlock gates like that already. Fortunately there's no pool near their house.

I can't imagine how a family gets through something like that.

There’s no way mine could open it unless she was 2 feet taller. It pulls up at the top to open it. I can also lock it with a key so it can’t unlatch at all. Still it’s all eyes on the baby when she’s playing on the patio. Can’t be too careful. They’re suicidal at that age.

Jesus. I’ve read too many stories with unmonitored little ones and pools. Even if I could afford it, I wouldn’t even think about putting a pool in until my kids got older or at least were certified to swim on their own. F that shite.

So awful. How wrenching for the family.

Summer is around the corner. I hate to read about each drowning that occurs every year around this time through August. It happens so fast too.

Prayers

Especially in South Louisiana, there are drowning hazards all over the place, even if you don't have a pool. With that said, you could be a perfectly good swimmer and still drown with any body of water around. A slip and fall, a medical event...several things. Water can be very dangerous.
