Its the same thing as buying a Monet or a Jackson Pollack. You don't get anything for it, really, but it looks pretty fricking awesome on your wall and there are only so many of them to go around.

You can resell those for profit; can't resell a high school kid or an NCAA plaque.

Dude this guy has probably lost watches worth 7 figures.

And you’re wondering why he’d be entertained by seeing his school win while being able to buy basketball players?

They’ve already done that. They aren’t buying 20 shares of Amazon hoping it will make them rich.

“Owners” in pro sports are in it to make money and build wealth.

I don’t believe that to be true. I think it is still a status symbol. There is probably much easier ways to build more wealth with when you are in that billionaire class than pro sports.

I think it is all a status/social circle item at that point in the world of billionaires.

And on the flip side there are probably more billionaires that couldn't give a shite about sports in general especially college sports that don't watch or have any real interest other than attending the super bowl yearly for status.

I know, right! It's not like its great for the businesses around Baton Rouge and across the state.
quote:

LSU Athletics provides a massive economic boost to Baton Rouge, generating nearly $500 million in total economic output for Louisiana, with a significant portion concentrated in the capital area. The department supports nearly 6,000 jobs statewide, drives millions in hotel, restaurant, and retail sales, and operates as a self-sufficient entity.

Now imagine how broke LA would be if they didn't invest in thier athletics!

Owners in college sports may be in it for the near instant gratification.

They like winning. They may have looked at estate planning and some of their relatives who presume inheritance and all but ignore the guy with money.
Gee, sit there with many millions doing nothing but earning lousy interest as the great nephews waste money and fail to impress, or help a team become a big time winner and know how to show gratitude of thousands of fans?

Tom Benson found one way to write a will. This is another.

It’s interesting how many colleges have billionaire boosters interested in throwing money away to win, yet pro sports teams have billionaire owners uninterested in winning and spending money at all

I still think these billionaires are overated in their spend ability.

These huge enrollment schools like UF, Ohio St, Purdue, etc have major alumni bases of 500,000.

If 100,000 alumni donate $100 that’s $10 mil.

Thats still the future IMO and the small and private schools are going to have an incredibly hard time competing.

it takes institutional commitment to engage with those alumni

Maybe Purdue and Ohio state do that but Florida does not
