Which in recent media has been an untouchable thing to criticize.

Ben Simmons met with Sixers' medical professionals and coach Doc Rivers today and informed them that he's not mentally ready to play to his expectations now, sources tell ESPN. He also talked to his teammates today.

Simmons has to be evaluated now and next steps will be based upon the determination of medical professionals, sources tell ESPN.

Sources: Ben Simmons spoke to Doc Rivers, Joel Embiid and entire 76ers team today and accepted everyone needs to take responsibility, including himself — but Simmons informed them all that he’s not mentally ready to play yet and needs time.

If he had played the mental health card this summer without having a public holdout, getting ejected from practice for insubordination, then claiming a back injury, this would be much easier to believe.

Can one look at Ben Simmons over the past few years and say he is of sound mental health with no questions? I doubt it.

Problem is that using this after numerous other excuses is sketchy as hell.

I don't think its that outrageous. We all knew he was mentally weak.

Dude is such a bitch

Try being better at basketball and all your "problems" will go away. Still laughing my arse off that he passed up a shot at the rim just cause Trae was next to him.

He found the loophole.

But...that's just a short term fix. He has to be evaluated by doctors, I doubt that'll fly for THAT long. At some point this season, he'll have to be cleared unless he is a really great actor or truly has mental issues.

He likely does have mental health issues but not ones that should impact him getting on the court.

Something like major depression would be such a diagnosis but, even then, the likes of DeRozan and Kevin Love have been suffering from this and struggling to admit it publicly, not using it as a crutch for bad behavior.

Give me a break. He is getting $29 million per year to hoop. Does he not realize that 99.99% of humans would swap him places in a heartbeat? His grandchildren won't have to work a day in their lives if he just plays for a couple years. I have less than zero empathy for this cat.

Simmons more than likely is just playing the card to get out of reporting, but these are some pretty horrific points trying to be made here.

Simmons is the poster child for why players with mental health issues generally kept them close to the vest.

They are seen as an excuse by a lot of people and multimillionaires having issues with depression or other problems doesn’t get you much sympathy.

I may buy league pass just to tune in the first night he’s physically in the arena in Philly. They may have to get him one of those plastic coverings the soccer players sit under to shield him from the shite that will be thrown at him

Which isn't the same thing as having mental health problems. If he is full of shite, which seems likely, it's a pretty big slap in the face to people who actually do have those issues.

No, he doesn't get much sympathy because he has handled this process like a spoiled child who has been treated like a prince since he was 16. Mental health issues are suddenly coming to the forefront now that this has gone sideways for him. It's not like Simmons came out last year and said "I'm having some personal issues I need to deal with and I need to step aside from basketball for awhile." He just refused to play for the Sixers and tried to strong-arm them into an unfavorable trade scenario to get out of a massive life-changing contract. Now that's it blowing up in his face, he's using this as a scapegoat.

You won't catch me criticizing Simone Biles, for instance, who handled a mental health issue directly and without making it a unnecessary dramatic saga.

My point isn’t that Simmons has real mental health issues. He probably doesn’t.

My point is that the likes of Demar DeRozan, Kevin Love, Delonte West, and others have had acknowledged real mental health issues and many of them tended to keep those issues quiet because they didn’t want to be seen as an opportunistic sack of shite like Simmons, blaming mental illness for their issues.
