His 2001-2004 lines on Fangraphs/Baseball Reference never fail to be eye-popping.

Yeah he was ridiculously good. The combo of precision and power was a sight to behold. Getting intentionally walked even with runners on 1st and so on.. I'm actually all for roids being used. I want to see the best product on the field.

I think he is a victim of his own arrogance. Hard to root for him or give him his due over guys like Ted Williams, Mike Schmidt, George Brett or Tony Gwynn.
Ted Williams is regarded as one of the most arrogant players in the history of the game.

Barry Bonds was the greatest baseball player until Shohei.

Joe D. & Ted W. both missed 3 yrs of their careers while serving in WWII. Then came back just as strong. Bonds would have gone off the deep end, if left alone on his own for 3 years. I'll take either over the druggie & I never saw either play.

In my lifetime of watching baseball which begins in the early 70's, the steroid Bonds was without question the best most feared hitter I ever saw and it's not even really that close.
I mean - the guy before he got on roids was very good, but the Quantam leap he took after is very telling as to what performance enhancers can do.

He was pretty damned good without them as well. Aside from hitting, he was arguably one of the top 3 left fielders in his day.

Babe Ruth hit more home runs than any other team in the American League one season, then 7 years later he did it again.

Ted Williams hit.400 AND flew jet fighters.
He can be as arrogant as he wants.

Barry was the greatest hitter I've ever seen. I would time my meals based on his at bats.
"Barry's not due up next inning? I guess I'll cook now"
"Barry is due up 3rd? Alright, dinner will have to wait 20 minutes"
And the son of a bitch delivered so much, everyone waiting on food got on board with it. He was incredible to be a fan of. He was far and away the most enjoyable athlete to watch.

The most dominant baseball player since Ruth and nobody else is close. He could’ve hit 800 homers if he wanted to play a couple more years as a DH or platoon guy.

Bonds (on steroids) > Griffey Jr. > Bonds (pre-steroids)
I agree that 2001-2004 era Bonds is the greatest and most feared batter I’ve ever witnessed. Before that Bonds and Griffey were neck and neck, both HOF level talents, and each mentioned among the all time greats already.
I always gave the edge to Griffey in the 90s personally, and I still maintain that if not for all of the bad injury luck it would be Griffey, not Bonds, that’d be the HR king and regarded as perhaps the best ever.

He's getting in eventually.
He was already a HoF'er before he raided up.
And he is still the greatest/most feared hitter of my lifetime (I'm 41) roids be damned.

Yeah, no. Bonds was better than Griffey all throughout the 1990s, and then he took it up several levels once he started juicing. At no point was Griffey ever better than Bonds. Statistically, it is not even debatable. Bonds just didn't wear his hat backward cool like Griffey did.

You're selling Junior short IMO.
He was a 5-tool player who talent wise was every bit as good as Bonds. Bonds was probably a better natural hitter but that was about the only thing that he had a leg up on Junior in.

Did he abruptly retire? Or did he get run out of the league? IIRC he all of a sudden disappeared and that was it.
