The playoffs are doing exactly what the bowls feared would happen and why they held out so long.

Attendance was dropping long before the playoffs. If anything Bowl Alliance/BCS started the decline as it made only 1 bowl game relevant.

Before multiple bowls had teams playing with a shot to win the title if the right teams won.

Yep, and why the bowls and New Year's day in particular used to be a lot more fun/crazy.

As an example in 1994 the Orange, Rose, Sugar, Fiesta and Citrus Bowls had teams playing in them that could have won the title of the right upsets occurred.

The vast majority of UCF alumni aren't even UCF football fans.

UCF alum at our hotel in Glendale was a UF season ticket holder

Bowl games are about match ups.

LSU v Ohio State/ Michigan/ Penn State/ Texas/ USC and so on would bring great attendance.

UCF v anyone outside of a game played in Florida or Possibly Atlanta will not.

where did you see that from?

I'm seeing where yesterday's game had ~69,900 fans in attendance... up a pretty good number from last year's ~61,800 attendance that went to see Penn. St. vs. Washington

57,246 according to ESPN.

Fiesta Bowl has done poorly for a while now. It's clearly a tier below the other big bowls at this point in terms of desirability.

Losing the Big 12 champion (or runner up if champ is in CFP) tie-in to the Sugar Bowl hurt the Fiesta a lot. Now with the playoffs and all of the Power 5 conferences having tie-ins with Rose, Sugar, or Orange Bowls...it leaves Fiesta with the NY6 scraps on years they aren't a semi-final game. At best, they'll get a P5 runner-up. Most of the time it'll be P5 3rd place team and/or G5 champ.

Whole lotta excuses being made by LSU fans up in here

My buddy had tickets to the game and flights covered. The hotel and meals would have been on me. The downside, the missis would have been alone on New Year's. I didn't want a divorce and sure as hell didn't want to give Jodie a chance to sneak in.

Ever since it went from Tostitos to PlayStation it has sucked.

I’d atttribute this to both teams being located incredibly far away and Phoenix not exactly being a cheap place to get to. Every other NY6 bowl game (to the best of my knowledge) appeared sold out or very close to it. The fiesta bowl had about 60% attendance.

Fiesta should've done what the Peach did - sell the tickets early and buyers get first dibs on playoff tickets next season.
Also, it was unseasonably cold Phoenix/Glendale/Tempe this year.
They should move it back to Sun Devil Stadium.

From Baton Rouge, La to Glendale, Ar it is 1,453.5 miles.

From Orlando, Fl to Glendale, Ar it is 2,152 miles.

This might have possibly played a factor..

Do they have good estimates for how many fans from each school attended?

I looked at buying tickets and the surprise to me was the ticket website was estimating more than 60% of attendees were UCF fans. That wasn't what it looked like on television though
