As a Knicks fan, I’ve always looked at the Linsanity thing as an embarrassment. A journeyman goes on a hot streak and fans desperate for something good jumped on the bandwagon.

I was referencing two players who were very good who became truly famous because of a highlight play.
The rest of the answers are mostly average players who are thought of better than they probably should be because of a highlight play.
Peoples wives knew who OBJ was after his catch, no one knew him outside of football who he was prior to it. He became a bonafide celebrity as a result when other guys were just football stars.
Same was true to a much lesser degree of Clowney.

any fanbase would have reacted to a role player having an explosion like that.
The fact that he was a "small" asian kid from Harvard doing it in Madison Square Garden against guys like Kobe Bryant definitely helped.
The fun thing is every time I see that the team was 8-1 during the Linsanity games, I always remember that the 1 loss was to the New Orleans Hornets

He went from an athlete to a celebrity in large part because of the catch.
Catch probably helped ruin his career because I don’t think he was as locked in once he started partying on yachts as he was before he got into the celebrity lifestyle but that’s a separate issue.

Sure. Most average people don’t know who some college defensive player is.
Most of the country saw that highlight and it amplified his national awareness to the point that casual people had heard of him.
It’s like if you ask some random teenage who David Bailey is they probably have no idea.
For awhile after that hit he became “the guy who knocked the helmet off”.

You can rephrase it however you like, it's still incredibly wrong. To act like Clowney was just some normal dude that people may or may not have heard of entering the final game of 2012 is just laughably misinformed.

I know his NFL career is more known for one game, but I don't think it's fair to put him on this list because he had name recognition and success in the biggest spotlight before that.
It's kind of like a band that had one chart topping hit but also a few other songs that people recognize. You wouldn't call them a one hit wonder.
