Athletes who became “names” off of one performance

Was watching the Appalachian State-Michigan game on YouTube (God I miss college football) and remembered Armanti Edwards and how this one game made him a college football star, even though he had a great career overall in FCS.
Then I started thinking about guys like David Tyree, Buster Douglas, and Jared Zebransky who essentially had one all-time performance that left its mark historically, but nothing much after.
I’m sure there are tons of examples…interested to see who yall remember.

Yep. What it once was.

Was talking to my dad on Father’s Day about where college FB is now compared to how we came up experiencing it. It’s such a sad thing knowing how I grew up loving it and how that experience is gone for my kids and theirs. The communal nature of it, local and in state kids you followed or knew for sometimes nearly a decade, the radio broadcasts on squirrel weekend in the woods, parking next to the stadium, my uncle living in the stadium, John Ferguson’s voice on radio, post game drives on the way home, the regional rivals that meant everything regardless of national implication.

Matt Flynn got a huge contract based off of one game against the Lions as AR’s backup.

Cardale Jones.
Though I guess it was technically two games, he became a "name" after winning the NC in only his second start.
He was the starter the following season before being benched.

Trevor Knight vs Bama. I thought he would be what Baker Mayfield ended up being.

Cardale started three games in 2014.
He split time with the starter from the previous year that went down to injury.
Hindsight, he shoulda gone pro after 2014 and hoped a team took a flyer.

Odell Beckham minus the one handed catch would be looked at very differently.
Same with Jadeveon Clowney and the helmet explosion against UM.
Both were elite players, but two plays made them famous.

Jeremy Lin, I mean, it was in the span of a week or so, close enough to one off for my taste.

So here’s a question that’s not really relevant to this discussion specifically because he had a solid NBA career, but…
If Gordon Hayward hits that halfcourt shot against Duke, is it the greatest shot in college basketball history?

This was my pick too. It was the most incredible 15 minutes of fame and proved how much confidence and momentum influence sports.
Then the athleticism and pure talent of the rest of the league took over and his 15 minutes were up. Decent role player the rest of his career though. He probably made so much money overseas from that week too.
