Medrick Burnett Jr., a redshirt freshman from California, was injured during a head-on collision during the game, according to a GoFundMe that his sister Dominece James organized for him.
quote:
“He had several brain bleeds and swelling of the brain. He had to have a tube to drain to relieve the pressure, and after 2 days of severe pressure, we had to opt for a craniotomy, which was the last resort to help try to save his life.”

The story in the link was deleted because he's actually still alive per sources.

Jesus that’s awful.

Man, I hate hearing these kinds of stories around sports. I guess it will always be a part of it. Especially with a violent sport like football, but that doesn't make it any less awful.
Prayers for the kid's family and friends. I can't even imagine...

I used to think people that mentioned not allowing their kids to play football were weird. Now I am starting to get it.

Yet, there are many peop[le on this site that think that targeting should be abolished.

It absolutely doesn't need to be abolished but the way that the rule is written (especially in the NCAA) leaves a lot to broad interpretation.

It shouldn't be abolished. All I want to see changed is for there to be 2 different tiers of targeting fouls. One for the egregious, vicious, or blatant violations that includes ejection. Another for incidental targeting calls that only carries the 15 yard penalty but no ejection. I'd even be fine if the one that includes ejection included a suspension for the entire next game too.
Basically similar to how the NBA does with flagrant 1 and flagrant 2 fouls.

Seeing the concussions rack up for Tua and Olave has been the scariest thing for me. Olave is more risky than Tua now because he gets hit for more often and gets put in scary situations far more often. What's more, if seems like they get concussed far easier than other players who haven't gotten 3-4 in a short period of time

Couldn't find a better video, but this news story has a video of the play that he got hurt on. Can't really see what happened, but it looks like a routine kickoff. Nothing that looked like a big hit or anything unusually violent, just a handful of defenders swarming the kick returner to make the tackle.
Only thing that really stands out is that a player from the coverage team lost his helmet as everyone was piling up. It doesn't say if that was Burnett who lost his helmet, but I'm guessing that it had to be.
ETA: as others have corrected me, he is wearing his helmet while being carted off. So it was someone else's helmet that fell off during the play

Just freaking awful. Dude had his whole life ahead of him.
My oldest has no real desire. Does Ju Jitsu, lots of music, and Wrestling. Totally good just tossing the football in the yard the more we know, don't feel the slightest desire to push or encourage it.

Alabama A&M University Mourns the Passing of Medrick Burnett Jr.
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. | Alabama A&M University is mourning the passing of football student-athlete Medrick Burnett Jr.
Burnett, who joined the Bulldog family in the summer of 2024 ahead of his redshirt freshman campaign, passed away the evening of November 26. He was a native of Lakewood, Calif., where he attended Mayfair High School. Upon graduating, Burnett joined the Grambling State University football program during the 2023 season.
"Today, our Bulldog family is heartbroken by the loss of Medrick Burnett Jr.," Alabama A&M Director of Athletics Dr. Paul A. Bryant said. "Medrick was more than an exceptional athlete; he was a remarkable young man whose positive energy, leadership, and compassion left an indelible mark on everyone who knew him. While words cannot adequately express our grief, we are humbled by the strength of his family, who stood by his side throughout this unimaginable ordeal.
We extend our deepest condolences and prayers to Medrick's parents, siblings, and loved ones. We also offer our heartfelt support to his teammates, coaches, and the entire Alabama A&M community who are mourning this loss. In this moment of sorrow, we come together to honor Medrick's legacy and celebrate the light he brought to our lives. May we all draw strength from one another as we navigate this difficult time.
Medrick Burnett Jr. will forever be remembered as a Bulldog. His spirit will remain an inspiration to all of us, reminding us of the importance of unity, resilience, and love."
Burnett, a linebacker, appeared in seven games this season, recording a season-best three tackles at Austin Peay.
Memorial service arrangements will be announced later.

Just starting? 10 years late. Love the sport but brutal to the body and would never want a kid to play.

You can see a guy on the other team lose the helmet and pick it up. But if that wasn’t enough he has his helmet on as they wheel him off.
