Who do they have this MOU with? The NCAA?

Which the AD and director of football operations at ND gets to pick. The ACC doesn't pick their games for them. But now ND is pissed at the ACC because they didn't promote ND over Miami for the playoffs. It's past time for ND to join a conference and earn their way into the playoffs instead of being gifted into the playoffs.

The ACC is moving to a 9 game conference schedule in 2026 and 2027, so scheduling/rescheduling games over the next few years has been challenging (and frustrating) for both the ACC and Notre Dame requiring a lot of coordination and cooperation. ND is trying to do its part by upgrading both its ACC schedule but also its schedule with the SEC and Big 10.

Some of the future games *(all home and home) recently announced include:

1.) Notre Dame and Clemson will be playing each other for 12 straight years from 2027- 2038

2,) Notre Dame and Miami have already announced 2026, 2028, 2031, 2032, and 2034, with more games being explored.

3.) ND vs Auburn will be playing for the first time in 2027 and 2028 (just announced about a month ago).

4.) ND vs Texas will be playing in 2028 and 2029.

5.) Notre Dame and Alabama are playing in 2029 and 2030.

6.) Notre Dame and Michigan State are renewing their rivalry in 2026 and 2027 (79 previous games).

7.) Notre Dame and Michigan are renewing their rivalry in 2033 and 2034 and are in discussion to add a few games before this.

8.) Notre Dame will play USC next year. Unfortunately, beyond that it is unknown due to the 9 game conference schedule. It would be a shame if this historic series was cancelled.

Florida State cancelled the 2026 game (not Notre Dame) JUST a month ago. FSU replaced this game with NEW MEXICO STATE. I think this is where some of the frustration from the Notre Dame AD with some of the ACC teams is coming from.

A lot of people don’t like the MOU that guarantees ND a playoff spot if in the Top12. Honestly I don’t really have a problem with it.

All the power conference champions are practically guaranteed a spot in the playoffs as long as they don’t suck (Duke). Notre Dame isn’t in a conference, so I don’t mind them having their own “path” to make the playoffs like all the P4 teams. Just don’t make that part stupid easy like Top20 or something… I’m fine with Top10 or Top12 guarantee for them. Everyone else is guaranteed a spot if they win their conference and finish in the Top12.

It should've been top 10 not top 12

There are 67. You add the 2 P12 teams and ND. 70.

A lot aren’t who I’d call “power”

They have their own path already, if they are a top 7 team they are guaranteed a playoff spot, just like any other at large team. Realistically that number is probably at worst a top 9 team rather than top 7, because the Big 10 champion and SEC champion are likely always going to be in the top 9.

They shouldn’t be “gifted” an extra 3 ranking spots.

What they should really do is say that it’s 5 conference champions or 4 conference champions and the highest ranked independent school if that school is ranked above the 5th highest ranked conference champion.

Well what you call it doesn't really matter. Its conference affiliation. Oregon St and Wash St aren't considered P4 right now as they are in a 2 man conference. I don't understand how ND can consider itself a power team either. They went 1-2 vs P4 teams with a winning record this year. The win was USC

Sark has already gone on record saying that he is re-evaluating their non-conference schedule after the next two years.

I'm hoping that once the College Football Playoff is refined and potentially expanded to 16 games, that this game (and others like it) are not jeopardized. Notre Dame and Texas have played each other 12 times and they have always been great games. Ohio State playing Texas was a great way to start the season and College football needs games like this.

It was already irrelevant because the committee still hasn’t decided on the “rules” of the playoff next season. It was never an “official” thing. The committee has until January 23rd to decide on the new rules, and I doubt that the ND auto-qualification thing will be part of the official rules.

Probably so. But don’t let the MSB know and ruin all their fun…

I think this year also inadvertently ruined the argument from the G5 that only keeping the top 4 conference champions is exclusionary to the G5, because two G5 schools made it this year. Now they can say that there are only 4 auto bids for conference champions and that doesn’t auto exclude the G5 because this year the 4th highest ranked school conference champion was a G5 school.

There are maybe 5 or 6 programs that have accomplished more than ND in the last 10 years.

OSU, UGA, Clemson, Bama, LSU, and Michigan. LSU and Michigan won titles in that time but have been meh more often than not in that time frame, especially Michigan. Clemson is falling out of that tier too. There’s no other teams besides those 6 I would trade ND’s last 10 years for.
