I am in this line of work, and in no way shape or form is 10% conservative. Hell, most carry preferred returns are 7-8%.

In 2038-2039 the Dodgers will pay Mookie and Ohtani 78 million then from 2040-2044 they will pay them 79m

Sources: After landing Shohei Ohtani, the Dodgers are aggressively pursuing free-agent RHP Yoshinobu Yamamoto. The flexibility Ohtani’s contract provides allows Los Angeles to make room for additional marquee FAs.

Yamamoto and the Dodgers are expected to meet later this week.

Curious how his agent gets paid on this.

I also assume shohei was willing to do this so the dodgers could build a winning team around him.

I'm not sure he comes out ahead when considering the depreciated value of future dollars. But California lawmakers have only themselves to blame. They created significant incentives for tax avoidance.

Leave the bulk of the contract to be paid later, after retirement. Make a “small” amount now, while also raking in millions in endorsement deals during his prime.

Smart

Tell me you don't know anything about finance without telling me you don't know anything about finance.

Deferring payment on a contract for a decade without getting some type of interest is the definition of stupid.

I’m sure it’s already covered, but what happens if he passes away? Does his family still get the money?

I mean I know he’s already rich rich, but this seems risky.

With tax deferral, and potentially elevated value due to his willingness to defer, etc.

He wouldn't take the deal, and his people wouldn't let him, if he loses out.

I'm not sure the legality of having a structure deferred comp account accruing interest on his behalf (our state has one, but very limited max contribution). Similar to a 401(k).

Apparently if he isn't living in California at the end of his deal he won't have to pay taxes on the 68 million

Where are you getting this from?

Maybe there is something in the fine print/loophole that makes this a net positive. But just what's being reported...I don't get it.

He should have signed with the Rangers or Astros.

No state income tax for home games.

No state income tax for two of the four divisional road opponents (Mariners and the other Texas team).

A's leaving California for Nevada.
