NBA wouldn’t let Chris Paul be traded but the MLB will allow deferral of 680 mill.

If he isn't living in California they won't, there is also no interest so it is saving the Dodgers money

For anyone wondering if MLB will challenge or cancel Ohtani's contract: The answer is unequivocally no. There is a specific article in the collective-bargaining agreement that addresses this. And it's very clear: Deferred money is limitless -- even $680 million of $700 million.

Apparently if he isn't living in California at the end of his deal he won't have to pay taxes on the 68 million

Naw. You have to pay taxes in the state the money is earned generally.

If I'm reading this correctly: Shohei Ohtani signed a 10-year, $20M contract and he will then make $68M every year from 2034-2043?

From a personal income perspective, I believe that is correct. From a luxury tax perspective for the Dodgers its more complicated. It looks like it will "cost" the Dodgers $400-$500M over the next ten years, significantly lowering the Average Annual Value which affects luxury tax value.

The fact I know what AAV means makes me kinda sad.

He's going to "earn" that $68 million making appearances during Dodger road games in Florida after his playing days are over.

Why? That's a common contract term.

As in luxury tax purposes right? This thread is all over the board with luxury taxes for the Dodgers vs personal taxes for Ohtani.

Ehhh, I am currently compiling data for year end tax purposes on a professional level, and the shell game of deciphering corporate tax rules and salary cap shite gives me the same feeling of needing to shower after dealing with it/reading about it.

Got it. The Forbes article mentioned that the rate of inflation actually determines the "hit" the Dodgers will take on this, which is interesting in its own right.

as for the deferred comp rule itself, I am not picking on the Dodgers here as all teams do it, but its just seems a disingenuous work around of the luxury tax rules MLB put in place, and MLB seems perfectly fine with that.

Unless they're sticking the 68 million in an account that pulls high interest, he's going to have significantly less money when he cashes in on that contract just with inflation alone.
