Interesting stuff Bunk. They era of chipping and charging is over. If you don't hit a terrific approach shot you're likely to have a missile of a passing shot to deal with if you can even get your racket on it. Also the serve and return speeds are so fast now there's hardly even any time to get to the net after a big serve for a volley. All of this is mostly due to more power and heavy spin.

Baseline bashing is the name of the game now. I saw Zverev come up to hit a short ball and then retreat back to the baseline instead of going to the net several times in his match. It was pathetic.

I would have guessed Cilic was older than 36. Guess that’s what happens when you turn pro at 17.

Jeez, Draper and Tommy P gone. Absolute carnage outside of Alcaraz/Sinner/Djok. Fritzy, don't screw this up.

Patrick McEnroe talked about this idea for awhile on PTI. He said after Sampras, Krajicek, Ivanisevic, etc…essentially turned Wimbledon into a serving contest the tournament committee decided they had to stop it just being a serving exhibition. They did several things: fluffier balls, worked on the subsurface and changed the grass,….all to slow down the ball moving through the court.

It was definitely the correct decision. Wimbledon was borderline unwatchable in the servebot era.

And the grace of the serve and volley has long been destroyed by modern racquets, it had to become a more traditional kind of tennis.

So grateful they saved Wimbledon

It was absolutely the wrong decision.

The fact that all 4 majors required different styles was what made it fascinating

To watch Lendl who desperately wanted to win this tournament change his style yet reach the finals was amazing

If the court and ball of today was being used in his time he’d have at least 3 Wimbledon titles and a potential slam. He may have won the slam in 86 or 87

String technology has also changed dramatically since Sampras.
Not really a great strategy to go charging into the net when their is not much of a chance to win from there.

Exactly. There is more or less only one style now. Grass is not supposed to be the same speed as red clay. Tennis would be more interesting if they brought the old grass back and played on faster surfaces indoors like they used to.
