TCU indefinitely “pausing” its series with SMU after the 2025 game, sources told @ActionNetworkHQ. The schools, located 35 miles apart, first met in 1915. This year’s game at TCU will be the 102nd meeting b/w the Horned Frogs & Mustangs in the Iron Skillet Rivalry

Another historical rivalry game being tossed aside by TV execs so they can try and get Guido Joe from the Bronx to care about college football. Newsflash: he isn't going to care.

The national media types pushing for an NFL-lite version of college football, forsaking these types of traditional rivalries, really grind my gears.

Don't get me wrong, I couldn't possibly give less of a shite about the two teams involved in the game, but it's just one more instance of "is nothing sacred?"

If the teams cared about this rivalry, I’m sure they would have continued it.

The people that care about the rivalry aren't the people making the decision to end it.

TV networks, conference officials, and transient athletic directors looking for the next dollar are making decisions at the expense of the fans who built college football to the entity that made it worth it for them to invest in in the first place.

That’s b/c they’re arrogant babies who can’t fathom how SMU could ever beat them. When Patterson was HC every time they lost he threatened to end it.

To answer your question, no, nothing is sacred anymore, not even the lifeblood of the sport - rivalry. It won't be long before players start sitting out of rivalry games to rest for the expanded playoffs, something that was unfathomable for the first 153 seasons of college football.

Who is watching TCU/SMU...The hyperventilating over stuff like this is ridiculous. I'd much rather gain new rivalaries like Ohio State vs USC/UCLA/Oregon/Wash. Who cares about TCU/SMU???

Ohio State vs USC/UCLA will never be a rivalry game. When will you ever interact with USC or UCLA fans/grads in your daily life? They're 2500 miles away and the novelty will wear off quickly. Bob Diaco tried creating a fake rivalry out of nothing once and was rightfully roasted for it.

That would be like saying Browns/Chargers is going to become a heated rivalry. It just won't. New rivalries don't just spring up overnight. There has to be some history, hatred, and geographic proximity to be a true rivalry game.

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

TV execs have to be the dumbest motherfrickers on the planet. Not only do they constantly ruin good TV shows, they can't fathom that they can get millions of eyeballs in Middle America. Northeast and West Coast people will never give a shite about college football. Lean into your estbalished audience instead of trying to alienate it.

Baton Rouge and Gainesville aren't exactly neighbors either but it still feels like a big game every year.
