Above are the facts.

My opinion is anything over 1.5 mm is respectable at 45.

I think that depends on income. A household making $100,000 /yr lives a different life and has different wants/needs than a household making $350,000 a year. So if the benchmark is $1.5 million by 45, I doubt the 100K household raising a family could achieve that.

I don't think there is a straight answer besides the more $ you have the better off you are. It is a personal matter and it should come down to the expenses you live on vs the amount of money needed to sustain those expenses in a given timeframe while factoring in inflation.

Great, would be that 1.5m, but likelihood in today's world is unlikely.

IMO, realistically great for the average person at 45 is prob 750k.

Society is generally debt ridden and keeping up with the Joneses. Always financing something for the next best thing.

Those that are responsible likely have a family and real debt, those that don't are likely irresponsible.

I'm 45 and this is basically me.

I'm definitely not worth 1.5 million at this point but it looks like I'm well above average per the link ITT. We have more equity in our house than the average 45 yr old's net worth it seems.

I’m 39 and happy with my network. Not top 1% but I’m in the middle of the next category. I expect to be at the high end of that category by 45. Starting 401ks early really helps wit( this

Click bait thread but I’ll bite. I hope to be financially independent at 45 but not necessarily retire. That makes my target quite a bit higher. All depends on how you want to define “great”…big differences between top 1% and top 25%.

I don't know what "great" means.

I'm 45.
Net worth is $950k.

Wife was stay at home for about 10 years. Then part time. She has been full time for almost 3.

House is paid off. 1 in college. 3 in high school.
We owe about $5k on a Toyota Sequoyah (our only debt).

Monthly cash flow burn is higher than I like it.
But our savings account is growing monthly, so I don't make a huge deal about it.

I’m 42 and north of that and I’m terrible with money. Made a lot of mistakes over the years but doing fine at 42 and my goal is to be at 8 figures by 52-55.

Respectable is underselling that. Something like 90% of people in this country NEVER have a net worth over $500,000 in their lifetime, much less 3x that by 45.

Those are national averages, factor in race/gender/education/marital status the numbers would be way different.

single black female without college degree <$500
married white female with college degree >quarter of million

Readers of this board are the exception not the rule.

These types of benchmarks are interesting to see how to compare in general terms.

I’m above $1.5M but less than $2.2M at 46. Fluctuations in stock market so it changes daily and valuations of business assets it’s hard to get an exact figure but that’s my estimate.

A net worth of someone with $500k with a pension and social security, paid off house at 65 might be perfectly manageable to protect their lifestyle. They might be in a better financial position than someone who retires with debt, mortgage, no pension and a net worth of $1M.
